Poles are at the forefront of Europe in terms of the amount of medications taken. In total, we ingest over 2 billion tablets a year, of which only about 10 percent. is prescribed by doctors. Poles’ home first aid kits are bursting at the seams. So let’s check what’s in them.

Ibuprofen

The undisputed number one – far behind leaving the rest of the pain relievers. Why did Poles love Ibuprom? It is effective and fast. It works well when our head hurts, a tooth tears, breaks in our bones, and a fever makes us unable to sleep. The active substance of the preparation is ibuprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) from the group of propionic acid derivatives, which has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties.

After oral administration, ibuprofen is rapidly absorbed, partly in the stomach and mainly in the small intestine. Its action appears after an hour. When taken chronically and in excess of the recommended doses, it increases the risk of gastric ulcer and / or duodenal ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding and heart attack. Ibuprofen and its metabolites cross the placenta and, in small amounts, also into breast milk.

  1. Five Supplements That Really Work

Acard

Taking into account that coronary artery disease is the main cause of death in Poland, silver should come as no surprise. Acard is simply acetylsalicylic acid (ASA) – the equivalent of aspirin. It belongs to the family of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Like other NSAIDs, it has anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic properties. Acard inhibits the production of thromboxane, the most potent activator of platelets, reducing their aggregation. Thanks to this, it prevents blood clots in the vessels. At the same time, however, it inhibits the synthesis of prostaglandins in the gastrointestinal mucosa, increasing the risk of bleeding.

Therefore, the lowest possible doses of ASA are recommended, which, while maintaining the antiplatelet effect, reduce potential side effects. Therefore, Acard only contains 75 mg of ASA. The drug is recommended for people who have had a heart attack and stroke, as well as for patients with unstable angina, peripheral arteriosclerosis, and after arterial stenting and coronary artery bypass surgery.

APAP

Bronze goes to the competition of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). APAP, or paracetamol, has an analgesic and antipyretic effect, but has no anti-inflammatory effect. It works well in pain of various origins: head, teeth, muscles, as well as menstrual, osteoarticular and neuralgia. Its active substance is paracetamol, which has a favorable side-effect profile.

Unfortunately, it is easy to overdose – in Western countries, paracetamol toxicity is the leading cause of acute liver failure. APAP can be used by children from 12 years of age, as well as pregnant women. Future mothers, however, should take the smallest dose of the drug for the shortest possible time.

Euthyrox N

A prescription drug subject to reimbursement was off the podium. Euthyrox N is a synthetic thyroid hormone. The drug is used in the absence or deficiency of natural thyroid hormones (in hypothyroidism, in some forms of thyroid tumors, in conditions after surgical removal of the thyroid gland, in thyroiditis), and as an adjunct in hyperthyroidism, in order to inhibit excessive enlargement of the thyroid gland (simultaneously with antithyroid drugs).

  1. When the thyroid fails, the body sends out signals. Here are the symptoms of Hashimoto’s disease

The individual dose is determined by the doctor after performing all the necessary tests. The fixed dose of Euthyrox is the daily dose that the patient takes once.

Bisocard

The active substance is bisoprolol, which belongs to a group of medicines called beta-blockers. Its action, like that of other drugs in this group, leads to a reduction in the heart rate, the strength of its contraction, and a reduction in blood pressure. Bisocard is indicated for the treatment of high blood pressure, ischemic heart disease, as well as chronic heart failure and arrhythmias.

Rutinoscorbin

For years, she has been building the resilience of Poles, and her position has not been harmed even by the competition advertised by the former first lady of the Republic of Poland, Jolanta Kwaśniewska. Rutinoscorbin contains a reliable duo: rutin (a plant flavone compound) and vitamin C, i.e. ascorbic acid. The preparation is recommended for use in diseases of venous vessels, microcirculation disorders, in the prevention / treatment of colds and flu, as well as in states of deficiency and increased demand for vitamin C.

After oral administration, ascorbic acid is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract (100% absorption for doses up to 200 mg). Rutin is absorbed mainly in unmetabolized form (about 10% of an orally administered dose is absorbed).

Magne B6

The list could not be complete without the drug, which is used by all stress-addicts, and in our country there is no shortage of them … According to statistics, 80 percent. Poles struggle with stress every day. If we add other factors influencing magnesium deficiency, i.e. a diet based on highly processed products and weakness for stimulants (coffee, tea, alcohol), the popularity of Magne B6 is not surprising. The active substances are magnesium lactate dihydrate and pyridoxine hydrochloride. Magnesium, which improves the activity of gray cells, is worth reaching for one more reason: perhaps it will remind us that over-the-counter drugs can also be harmful …
