Although herpes labialis is not a dangerous disease, certainly no one enjoys this type of “surprises” appearing suddenly on the face. No wonder we want to get rid of the problem as soon as possible. We usually reach for pharmacy specifics: patches, ointments and creams. Before you run to the pharmacy, try home remedies for herpes.
According to some, they are as effective and safe as the drugs sold. How much truth is there? They will certainly help people who have only noticed the first symptoms of herpes, i.e. burning and tingling lips. This does not mean, however, that they will not help in more advanced cases – they are simply the most effective at the first symptoms.
However, if this “uninvited guest” appears on your face very often, do not wait and see a dermatologist as soon as possible. It may turn out that you will need a stronger drug, available only on prescription. Below is a list of proven cold sore remedies, some of which may surprise you:
- Garlic and onion – garlic is known as a natural antibiotic and an effective medicine for all ailments. Onion does not lag behind, also boasting the title of one of the healthiest vegetables. They have antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal properties. It turns out that also in this case they can work a lot: put a half-cut garlic clove or a piece of onion on the affected area. However, keep this type of compress short – only for a few minutes, but quite often. Choose only fresh vegetables that contain a lot of juice, not old and dried ones. You can also prepare onion syrup and apply it with a soaked cotton ball on a cold sore.
- Honey – this delicious, golden liquid also has a healing effect. It has viral and bactericidal properties, so it will be a great way to treat herpes, which is a viral disease. Smear it with a small amount of honey, thanks to which you will prevent the spread of inflammation.
- Tea tree oil – this time something special that not all of us have in our pantry or first aid kit (and we should!). Tea tree oil has disinfectant and antiviral properties, and additionally accelerates the wound healing process. Mix a few drops of the oil with the cream and apply it to the affected area.
- Polopyrine – this is a slightly less natural method, but certainly many people are in possession of polopyrin. In this case, it is enough to just dip the tablet in water and apply it to the blister.
- Aloe – cut an aloe leaf, break it and apply the oozing pulp to the cold sore. This wonderful ingredient, standing on the windowsills in many homes, accelerates the healing process of wounds.
- Tea – quite a surprising method, which is, however, proven and effective. Regular tea contains tannins that have excellent astringent and antiviral properties. All you have to do is put a warm bag to your mouth after brewing a cup of tea.
