Some common and beneficial substances can become dangerous if mixed together.
When we fail to clean something, we sometimes succumb to the temptation to try everything under our sink. However, do not rush to test yourself as an amateur chemist. Some substances, which are not safe by themselves, can give off dangerous vapors or produce unexpected chemical reactions when combined with other chemicals.
Always read the instructions and the composition of the cleaning products and never mix the following pairs.
1. Bleach (bleach) + ammonia (ammonia)
When bleach is mixed with ammonia, the toxic gas chloramine is produced, which causes chest pain and shortness of breath. Many glass and window cleaners contain ammonia, so don’t mix them with bleach.
2. Blockage remover + other blockage remover
It is not recommended to mix two different drain cleaning chemicals or even apply one immediately after using the other. They have very powerful ingredients that can even explode when mixed. Use one product as directed (usually half a bottle is poured out). If that doesn’t work, don’t try another chemical, but call a plumber.
3. Baking soda + vinegar
While baking soda and vinegar on their own can be used to cleanse your entire home, avoid hobbyist recipes that include both. Soda is alkali and vinegar is acid. When you mix them, you get mostly water and a little sodium acetate. Vinegar also foams the soda and can explode if stored in a closed container.
4. Hydrogen peroxide + vinegar
Experts say it’s safe to spray hydrogen peroxide and vinegar one by one on fruits and surfaces, wiping them down between sprays. However, don’t mix them in the same container. This will lead to the formation of peracetic acid, which is toxic and can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system.
5. Bleach + vinegar
This mixture seems to be a powerful disinfectant, but never mix these ingredients. Together they produce chlorine gas, which, even in small amounts, can cause coughing, shortness of breath, and burning eyes.
6. Bleach + rubbing alcohol
In the mixture, this is practically chloroform – what the villains in the movies use to wet a rag to turn off their prey. You may not pass out, but your body will definitely not benefit from this toxic combination. Never mix bleach with anything other than plain water. Other cleaning products, such as those for windows or toilets, may include ammonia or acids, which should not be mixed with bleach.
