Six people died last year of listeriosis after eating contaminated cheese from Prolactal in the Austrian state of Styria, Austria’s health ministry said on Tuesday.
Four of the deaths occurred in Austria and two in Germany. According to the ministry, all Austrian victims were elderly.
Last month, Prolactal ordered a withdrawal of its products from the market, and on Tuesday said it had stopped production until the matter was resolved.
In 2009, there were 45 cases of listeriosis and 11 deaths from listeriosis in Austria. (PAP)
