5 summer skin care myths

Many articles have been written about how to care for your skin in the summer, but there are even more beauty myths on this topic. We will debunk some of them right now.

Myth No. 1: Sunscreen is enough for skin care in summer

Do you also think that a moisturizer for daily care in summer can be put aside? All the same, the skin sweats, and the cream rolls off. The sunscreen will cope with both care and protection from ultraviolet radiation.

This is mistake. Moisturizing is essential during the active sun season more than ever. Only well-moisturized skin is able to cope with the stress caused by UV radiation. If your usual daily moisturizer is no longer comfortable, there is a reason to replace it with the following options:

  • moisturizing fluid + sunscreen;

  • moisturizing serum + sunscreen;

  • moisturizing sunscreen.

On vacation in hot countries, the skin needs more intense hydration. Don’t just use your moisturizer in the morning and evening, don’t forget about it during the day after you get back from the beach and take a shower.

Aquafluid for normal to combination skin “Hydrating Genius”, L’Oréal Paris despite the lightest liquid texture, it gives a deep moisturizing effect thanks to active ingredients, among which are hyaluronic acid and aloe vera. Affects 5 layers of the epidermis.

Daily gel-serum for skin exposed to aggressive external influences, Mineral 89, Vichy 89% consists of thermal water from Vichy springs, which in itself has a beneficial effect on the skin, strengthens it. Hyaluronic acid provides moisture. The serum is instantly absorbed.

Moisturizing Facial Lotion, SPF 25, CeraVe in addition to moisturizing with ceramides and hyaluronic acid, it provides UV protection.

Sunscreen is not a substitute for skin care. She needs moisture and oils all year round.

Myth number 2: cosmetics with vitamins and oils are not needed in summer

Many girls believe that in summer the skin needs less nutrients and vitamins in cosmetics, as there are more of them in the diet. And nutritious oils are completely unnecessary, because the production of sebum increases in the heat, and no one needs excess shine.

Yes, in summer we usually get more vitamins from fresh berries, fruits and vegetables. But, as the medical expert of the Vichy brand Elena Eliseeva recalls: “The skin receives them last. Whether she will have enough of the necessary substances from food is a big question. Therefore, cosmetics with vitamins in summer are no less relevant than in winter.

Vitamins C and E, popular in beauty formulas, are powerful antioxidants that can help repair UV damage.

As for the texture of products, in the summer season, pay attention to dry oil: it is instantly absorbed, does not leave a greasy film, and therefore has every right to be in a summer cosmetic bag, especially with dry skin.

The hydrolipidic film of the skin does not change its composition depending on the season, it needs lipids all year round. It is no coincidence that dry oils have become a trend in sunscreens.

Note to those with oily skin: if sebum production increases significantly in the heat, this may indicate overdry skin. In the case of oily skin, this, oddly enough, is not uncommon. Dehydration can be the result of too aggressive cleansing. So avoid alcohol formulas in your cleansers and don’t shy away from light moisturizers.

Myth #3: SPF is enough for makeup.

Many people have come to rely on any SPF-labeled product for sun protection, including primer, foundation, BB cream, and powder. This is a misconception that can harm the skin.

In decorative cosmetics, SPF 15-20 filters are often used, and this is not enough for full protection. For most phototypes common in Russia, a filter of at least “thirty” is required.

Full sun protection means updating the product on average every 2 hours, and redoing makeup with such a frequency will not work.

“Yes, BB creams and foundations with a low SPF protect you from the rays of the city sun,” says Elena Alekseeva, medical expert of the Biotherm brand. “But if you spend a lot of time outdoors, this protection is not enough.”

Be careful in choosing cosmetics: now there are products that can simultaneously provide both decent care and full protection from ultraviolet radiation.

Myth #4: You need an alcohol tonic in the summer

For those who change their usual tonic for alcohol in the summer, the logic is this: in hot weather, the skin becomes fatter, you always want to wipe your face, and even acne appears. So, it is necessary to dry the skin – and here you can’t do without an alcohol-based tonic. This is not true.

Small pimples, which often appear in the heat, are sometimes mistaken for acne and begin a fierce fight against them, using alcohol-containing drying agents. But the fact is that in the summer our skin begins to actively produce sebum to counteract the drying effect of the sun. Hence the increased brilliance.

By exacerbating this process, we can start a vicious cycle: oily skin will begin to produce even more sebum in order to protect itself. And the more we dry it, the more problems there will be.

In hot weather, the skin requires gentle care. Lotions and tonics should be chosen exclusively soft and moisturizing – and no alcohol.

Myth #5: Wash your face with cold water in the summer

Summer is an excellent period for hardening, but the opinion that it is useful to wash yourself with ice water in the heat is wrong. Hardening, a contrast soul, must be approached with caution. All this is stress both for the body as a whole and for the skin in particular. And extreme skin care, especially in the hot season, when it is already exposed to aggressive ultraviolet radiation, is not a good idea.

Do not get carried away with hardening and wash yourself with cold water only!

In the heat, even if you have given up makeup, it is recommended to start cleansing with micellar water or milk to remove excess fat, urban dust. After all, summer in our latitudes is the most unfavorable time of the year from the point of view of ecology.

Cleansing micellar gel, Garnier combines the softness of micellar water and the uncompromising cleansing with water: while washing, it simultaneously removes makeup and all surface impurities.
