In connection with the restrictive measures introduced to combat the spread of the coronavirus, the blood transfusion departments are practically empty. Specialists are beginning to sound the alarm: very soon hospitals will begin to experience a blood deficiency. Our reporter told why it is worth becoming a donor, and the doctor gave recommendations for whom it is especially useful.
Any healthy person between the ages of 18 and 60, weighing more than 50 kg, can become a blood donor in Russia. There are many myths why it is not worth or difficult to become a donor, but here are 5 reasons why donating blood is beneficial. Moreover, the donor can help not only other people, but also himself.
1. Despite the progress of medicine, artificial blood has not yet been invented. During severe operations, with injuries or childbirth with large blood loss, it is blood transfusion can save a person’s life. Moreover, only 15 minutes of the donor’s personal time and a healthy dose of donated blood (450 ml) can help three patients at once.
2. For the treatment of a number of diseases, not only whole blood is indispensable, but also its components. A concentrate of erythrocytes, plasma preparations or platelet preparations are obtained from the blood, which go to support the life of patients with hemophilia, the treatment of cancer or hemolytic disease in newborns. The collection of blood components, such as plasmapheresis, usually takes longer than the usual donation.
3. Blood donation is absolutely safe. After collection, the blood is first sent to be checked for viruses and infections. If they are available, the donor is immediately informed about this. It is simply impossible to get infected in the process of donating blood, because sterility is one of the most important points in the process of collecting and processing blood.
4. Donating blood is useful for the donor himself. Only a doctor can admit or not admit to donation, therefore, a medical check-up is required before donating blood, and regular donation of blood means regular medical supervision. With a sufficient amount of fluid, the body is able to recover within a few hours, andthe next day, the donor can return to an active lifestyle. Donating blood promotes self-renewal processes in the body and can prevent cardiovascular diseases. It is no coincidence that earlier many diseases were treated with bloodletting.
5. Donating blood is easy a great opportunity to help people from your region for free. If you become an honorary donor (this is at least 40 blood donations), in Russia you can receive monetary compensation, reduced fare and the obligatory sense of pride that you are the savior of someone’s life.

Many doctors and scientists argue that the benefits of donation for the body are irrefutable. In many civilized countries, this has become an integral part of a healthy lifestyle along with proper nutrition, exercise, and so on. This opinion is shared by specialists in the field of medicine, doctors, professors, candidates of medical sciences, who dealt with this problem. Regular donation of blood provides a person with the prevention of diseases of the immune system. Here we are talking more about chronic diseases caused by metabolic disorders, which include gout, atherosclerosis, pancreas, stomach, liver. Researchers have also shown that the systematic donation of blood for transfusion to patients can reduce the likelihood of cardiovascular pathology, since periodically, roughly speaking, excess blood and its components gradually put a greater load on the vessels of the heart.
Donation can be a good prevention of sudden bleeding. The body, accustomed to actively producing new blood cells, will help you recover faster.
Men are recommended to donate blood for good deeds up to five times a year, women – up to four times a year. A healthy person from 18 to 60 years old can become a donor. The donor’s weight must be 50 or more kilograms. Constant body temperature should not exceed 37 degrees. Permissible values of systolic pressure 90-140, diastolic – 60-90, pulse rate – 50-100 beats per minute. Before donating blood, tests for hepatitis, HIV and syphilis are taken. Contraindications are ARVI, exacerbation of chronic pathology, hepatitis, HIV, syphilis. The process of donating blood is allowed strictly after consulting a therapist and passing tests.
List of contraindications
There are absolute and temporary contraindications for admitting a person to the ranks of donors, depending on the disease. Absolute contraindications: HIV, AIDS, syphilis, viral hepatitis, tuberculosis, brucellosis, typhus, leprosy, echinococcosis, oncology, diseases of the nervous and cardiovascular systems, pulmonary emphysema, bronchial asthma in exacerbation, obstructive bronchitis, exacerbation of chronic liver diseases cholecystitis, cirrhosis of the liver, cirrhosis of the liver, stomach and duodenal ulcers, urolithiasis, exacerbation of diffuse and focal kidney damage, pathology of the endocrine system with severe metabolic disorders, high degree of myopia, that is, myopia, complete blindness, acute chronic severe purulent-inflammatory diseases of ENT organs, psoriasis, erythroderma, eczema, pyoderma, sycosis, lupus erythematosus, blistering dermatosis, fungal lesions of internal organs and skin, acute chronic osteomyelitis, pustular skin diseases, surgery in case of organ resection or, conversely, organ transplantation.
Temporary contraindications are transfusion of blood or its components, surgery, including abortive termination of pregnancy, tattoos, donor acupuncture, staying on business trips abroad for more than two months in a row, staying in malaria-endemic countries of subtropical and tropical climates for more than three months, malaria in the absence symptoms and negative results, acute pathologies of ARVI, influenza, tonsillitis, vegetative-vascular dystonia in the activation stage, acute chronic inflammatory process in a state of exacerbation, period of menstruation, pregnancy, lactation, allergies in a state of exacerbation, recently vaccinated, taking medications or alcohol-containing products. For each of these reasons, people are temporarily not allowed to donate.
Donation is undoubtedly a necessary and noble business, but any intervention in the human body, especially at this level, is far from simple, as it seems to many. Whatever it was, each type of donation – blood, skin, internal organs, is fraught with certain risks for both the donor and the recipient. It should be noted that if donating blood is observed, the possible negative consequences for the donor’s health are minimal, they are practically nonexistent. Greater risk may be for the recipient. But considering all of the above, the risks are minimal.
Donor movement of the Russian National Research Medical University named after N.I. Pirogov, together with the blood transfusion department of the R.Kh. N.I. Pirogov, O.K. Gavrilov and the blood transfusion department of the N.N. D. Rogachev launched a campaign on social networks under the hashtag #yamydonora.
People are not afraid to go to hypermarkets and sweep food and goods off the shelves, but they are afraid to go to blood centers and blood transfusion departments! – the organizers lament. – Forgetting that before donation donors are always examined by doctors, a blood test is performed. In these turbulent times, this is a great way not only to help people in need of blood components, but also to take responsibility for their own health. “
Why is it during quarantine that donation should not be forgotten?
1. Few people know, but blood and plasma are also used for the treatment of coronavirus pneumonia, since mostly older people come with chronic diseases, with hemoglobin levels up to 60 g / l, well, with various metabolic disorders, blood coagulation system and a decrease immunity.
2. Hematological and oncological patients, including children, continue their treatment. Patients with injuries continue to be admitted, childbirth is underway, which also requires a transfusion. All of them receive adequate treatment, but in conditions of a shortage of blood and components, their lives are at risk.
The organizers of the action urge donors not to succumb to a general panic and not to forget that every day hundreds of hospitals need blood.
Only a person can help a person!
