5 naive questions about laser hair removal that worry many

Why will you have to pay more for a laser than for wax, and when the result will be seen.

Laser hair removal is still debated in the beauty world. Many are sure that it hurts, does not justify their investment and may even lead to oncology. Others, on the contrary, tell how, thanks to laser hair removal, they almost forgot about unwanted vegetation.

An expert of the Beauty room program on the Russian Music Box channel agreed to answer the questions about laser hair removal that worry many.

Maria Markus dermatovenerologist, cosmetologist, trichologist in the clinic of aesthetic and laser medicine “Laser Doctor”

Is laser hair removal dangerous?

Any procedure with the word “laser” in the name causes fear, but when we explain to the patients the principle of the device’s operation, a number of questions are immediately removed. Not a single case in medical practice has yet been proven that laser cosmetology is harmful. But, of course, there are a number of limitations. The laser hair removal procedure cannot be carried out for people with cancer, patients with inflammatory processes and skin rashes in the treatment area. I would like to emphasize that laser hair removal is more of a medical procedure. The skin is the body’s largest protective organ, and it is better to carry out any procedures in a medical clinic after consulting a certified physician.

How does laser hair removal work? The light pulse affects the hair pigment, melanin. He begins to heat up, destroys the vessels that feed the follicle, as well as the cells responsible for hair growth. As a result, the root dies off, the follicle collapses, and the hair falls out.

The widespread opinion that it is the laser for hair removal that can cause cancer has not been confirmed. X-rays are much more dangerous. They can cause DNA mutation and increase the risk of malignant tumors.

Will the procedure hurt?

If you came to laser hair removal 20 years ago, then the sensations might not be pleasant. Then the ruby laser was mainly used, but it was not able to distinguish the pigment of the hair and adapt to the skin tone.

Now more modern lasers are used for the procedure: alexandrite, diode. The first one is already tuned to the hair pigment, but it is not equipped with a cooling system, so it is better for them to remove dark hair on fair skin. The second learned to distinguish between the degree of sunburn and to act on the hair to a point almost to its base, minimizing the effects on the skin.

So, thanks to the developments, the laser hair removal procedure has become almost painless. An exception is the individual reaction of the body.

When will the result be and how many procedures are needed before complete hair removal?

The laser beam is captured by the pigment in the hair follicle, the follicle is heated and destroyed. Within 10-14 days, the hair dies and falls out. The first results from the laser hair removal procedure are visible immediately. In most cases in my practice, hair stops growing completely after 8-10 treatments. This is because laser hair removal works when the hair is in the active growth phase. On different parts of the body, this rate is different, therefore, to perfect smoothness, each area needs a certain number of procedures.

Why is laser hair removal more expensive than shugaring?

First, the laser itself is significantly more expensive than sugar paste. Secondly, the specialist performing this procedure must have a medical education, which means that the price of his services will be higher than that of an ordinary shugaring master. In addition, the status of the salon and its location also affect the final cost of laser hair removal, do not forget. Of course, the usual hair removal products are cheaper (razors, wax hair removal, hair removal using thick sugar paste), but after such procedures the hair does not stop growing.

It is important to choose the right type of laser hair removal. The two most popular treatments are TRIPLE and MOVEO. They are both made with alexandrite laser, but there is a difference.

The MOTUS AX alexandrite laser from the Italian manufacturer DEKA treats even the most sensitive areas, works on tanned skin and light hair. Therefore, MOVEO epilation is universal for people of any skin phototype. The procedure is absolutely painless.

Is laser hair removal a bunch of side effects?

I would not say that there are many restrictions. It is more of a safety net for the patient. For example, the procedure is not recommended for pregnant women and women during breastfeeding, so that the woman does not get worried. Skin inflammatory diseases themselves imply any restrictions on procedures, since the skin must be healthy.

In fact, if you follow all the recommendations of the cosmetologist, then the procedure will be completely harmless. Doctors advise not to eat foods high in vitamin A (pumpkin, curry, halloumi cheese, cod liver, butter), and also refrain from sunbathing three days before the procedure. In addition, it is worth giving up vitamin C for this period, as it sensitizes the skin. And if you just finished your course of antibiotics, then postpone laser hair removal for at least a week so that the skin is not too photosensitive.

These and many other questions in the field of beauty are discussed in Beauty room program on TV channel Russian Music Box.
