4D ultrasound is a test that allows you to obtain an accurate image of the organ under examination. It is very often used in control examinations of pregnant women because it guarantees a precise image of the inside of the uterus. Today’s technology makes it possible to detect congenital defects and genetic defects even in the prenatal period, among others thanks to the 4D ultrasound examination.

The 4D ultrasound examination is nothing more than a three-dimensional examination. This means that a woman can see what is happening in the womb at any given moment as if she were watching a movie from inside her belly. 4D ultrasound is not only the possibility of observing what is happening to the child at a specific moment, but most of all the examination guarantees confirmation or exclusion of any congenital or genetic defects.

4D ultrasound in the assessment of the fetus

The basis for the control of the pregnant woman and the fetus is gynecological examination, but most of all ultrasound. 2D USG examinations are possible, i.e. a two-dimensional image that allows the observation of not only the inside of the uterus, but also the outline of the fetal body, with 2D USG it is also possible to accurately assess the child’s internal organs. Two-dimensional examination allows you to check the condition, dimensions, shape of various internal organs of the fetus. This type of ultrasound makes it easier for the gynecologist to examine the placenta, its position and structure, as well as the amount of amniotic fluid.

4D ultrasound and traditional pregnancy ultrasound

Traditional ultrasound may be incomprehensible to future parents, while 4D, 3D or 2D ultrasound allows for a complete image, and in the case of 4D ultrasound it is not only an image, but also a movement. It is not only and only watching the child, this type of professional examination guarantees the determination of the child’s health, therefore in a situation where there is a risk of a genetic disease. Unfortunately, because 4D ultrasound is a relatively new technology and not so popular in pregnancy diagnostics, there are no specific results to assess the usefulness of the equipment yet. However, gynecologists using this type of ultrasound confirm that the examination is certainly reliable when it comes to control for cleft lips and palate. It is also useful in assessing any deformities of the lower and upper limbs or spina bifida. Of course, when operating this equipment, you need skills and knowledge not only in the field of human anatomy, but also in the handling of the equipment.

When to perform 4D ultrasound?

According to the main recommendations of the Polish Gynecological Society, ultrasound examinations during pregnancy must be performed at least three times during the entire pregnancy, namely between 11 and 14 weeks of pregnancy, 18 and 22 weeks and the last after 30 weeks. It is worth deciding to have a high-class test equipment that will allow for a precise image and functional assessment of the fetus, as well as the condition of the reproductive organs. Properly performed ultrasound is the knowledge needed not only in prophylaxis, but above all in a situation that requires immediate action by a doctor. According to gynecologists, a good time for a 4D USG examination is after the 30th week of pregnancy, when the facial bones are already developed, so it is possible to observe the baby’s facial expressions, its features and activity. After the examination, the doctor should add a full description to the printed photos and, of course, a CD with a recording must also be attached to the whole set. According to specialists, this test is safe for both the mother and the child, of course, it should be performed only in the amounts determined by the Polish Gynecological Society.
