40 years in line to see a specialist

In one of the hospitals in Lower Silesia, you have to wait … 40 years for an endocrinologist appointment. The problem stems from an insufficient number of specialists and an insufficient amount of funds that the facility receives from the National Health Fund.

Dobrzyńska Medical Center in Wrocław suspends enrollment in an endocrinologist in July. Reason? At the moment, patients are scheduled for registration for 2022, but as Maciej Sokołowski, director of the facility, emphasizes, the real waiting time for an appointment is 40 years. In 2015, out of 1600 people enrolled for visits, only 41 patients were admitted. A patient may see a doctor as a matter of urgency, but he can only count on it when his condition deteriorates drastically.

Hospital officials say the money they receive from the National Health Fund is too low to cover the ever-increasing costs of tests and treatments. Therefore, the facility has been paying extra for visits to the endocrinologist for a long time. Worse still, more and more professionals are leaving CMD and switching to private practice because the hospital cannot afford to pay for the amount they require.

In recent weeks, three endocrinology clinics have been closed in Lower Silesia and more clinics are currently preparing for this.
