Regular physical activity reduces the risk of premature death, scientists have proven. It turns out that you only need to spend 30 minutes a day vigorously exercising to extend your life.

Until recently, on the occasion of the review of the book ‘Reverse the clock’, we wrote how by regular exercise you can protect yourself from disease, and thus prevent aging and extend your life. Today let’s show you the evidence that increasing physical activity can be as beneficial for us as quitting smoking!

The study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, is confident that a daily effort of 30 minutes reduces by 40%. risk of death from any cause. 26 men participated in the study. Based on the completed questionnaires, they were divided into groups depending on physical activity:

  • sitting/ watching TV
  • medium active – walk or cycle to work and back for at least 4 hours a week. 
  • moderate – for at least 4 hours a week, he takes additional physical activity, i.e. sports activities, individual exercises
  • advanced – he practices a specific sport several times a week, competes with others

Information was collected from the subjects on height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and smoking. Only healthy people underwent further research. The subjects were monitored for 12 years. The analysis of the obtained results showed that:

1. People who exercised lightly for less than an hour a day did not reduce their risk of dying from any cause. 

2. Increasing activity to more than an hour was associated with a reduction in the risk of death by as much as 32 – 56 percent. 

3. The differences in the risk of death between active and inactive people were striking, even at the age of 73.

People who exercise regularly and intensively in their free time lived on average 5 years longer than those classified as ‘sitting’.

If we only have half an hour, we should exercise more intensively, then, according to the research results, we have a chance to reduce the risk of death from 23 to 37%. If, on the other hand, we manage to do such exercises for more than an hour, the risk of death may be 36-49%!
