3 movie premieres this winter: recommendations from Psychologies

A jousting medieval duel, a bright musical in the style of the 1960s, or a historical drama by Ridley Scott with an all-star cast about the history of the Gucci fashion house – this winter’s novelties cannot but rejoice. Choose what you like, and hurry to the cinema before the next lockdown begins.

“The Last Duel”

Fast trial

In the XNUMXth century, a feud broke out between two knights and former comrades-in-arms: the wife of one of them accused the other of raping the other. And in those days in Normandy there was no other way to establish the truth, except for a duel – the truth will be on the side of the winner. This was the last “judicial duel” in Europe, when the rightness of the plaintiff or the defendant was determined by the death of one of them.

The film seems to have been played and edited three times – it consists of three parts, since the events in it are seen through the eyes of each of the characters.

Suffering Middle Ages

The most important of these three parts is The Truth of Marguerite de Carrouges, the one in which we learn about what happened from the perspective of the heroine, played by Jodie Comer. And we learn about the woman of the Middle Ages, about her total subordination, about her life in anticipation of her husband from the campaign, much more than we know from the “male” stories.

Good old ethics

There is something captivating in this even for those who do not sympathize with what in Russia is called the “new ethics”. Three star Hollywood alpha males – George Clooney, Ben Affleck and Matt Damon – acted as producers and teamed up with 84-year-old classic Ridley Scott to make a film about female trauma to give voice to the victim. By “dueling” they seemed to be trying to show that no “new ethics” exists, because there is no novelty either in the thirst for justice or in the desire to take into account the opinion of those who are weaker, poorer, who are less fortunate than others.

Genre: historical thriller.

Starring: Jodie Comer, Matt Damon, Adam Driver, Ben Affleck.

In theaters from November 25

ACTRESS

A 25-year-old Liverpool native, the daughter of a football club employee, Jodie Comer, went to audition for the TV series Killing Eve from a supermarket checkout, where she worked part-time while waiting for acting offers. But the role of the Russian adventurer Oksana, the most inventive of the killers, secured her the British Academy of Film and Theater Award, the English Oscar. And, more importantly, recognition of her talent and an offer to star in The Last Duel.

“HOUSE OF GUCCI”

Ridley Scott releases the second film in a year, also, interestingly, historical – about the dynasty and the fashionable empire of Gucci, where there was a place for luxury, and villainy, and creative exploits, and murder.

Genre: thriller, drama.

Starring: Lady Gaga, Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Salma Hayek, Al Pacino.

In theaters from November 25

“WEST SIDE STORY”

Early 1960s. Flared skirts, pipe trousers, greasing. Is this really just a remake of the same West Side Story that won 1962 Oscars in 10? Of course not. It’s a Steven Spielberg movie: naphthalene-free grease.

Genre: musical, melodrama. Music by Leonard Bernstein.

Starring: Rachel Zegler, Ansel Elgort, Corey Stoll.

In theaters from December 9
