It is customary to swear at today’s youth: they say, they are irresponsible, infantile, they don’t want to care about anyone, and they don’t want to think about the future either. 23-year-old Australian Tommy Connolly is living proof that things are not true. Quite the opposite.
Tommy was an ordinary student: he studied, moonlighted, seriously went in for sports, in the hope of joining the Australian national running team. And then suddenly it occurred to him to find his cousin, whom he had not seen for more than 10 years. Tommy found her. Kjarna had just turned 17, she was homeless and barefoot, she had no education, and all her belongings were placed in a skinny backpack over her shoulders. Chiarna was also 32 weeks pregnant. The alleged father of the child was in prison.
“Life has been cruel to Kjarna. She roamed the streets more than anyone else, she knew the police in her area better than her own family. Nobody deserves such a life, “wrote Tommy on his Facebook page.
The guy spent the next few weeks signing endless papers. Tommy, without hesitation for a second, decided to adopt Kjarna. Meetings with representatives of various social services, negotiations – he fearlessly went through it all. At the same time, he was engaged in the arrangement of the nursery – after all, the future baby from the maternity hospital must be brought somewhere. But first, it was necessary to agree with the doctors about future childbirth: after all, Kjarna was not registered, was not examined even once during her pregnancy.
All this time, Kjarna lived with Tommy. She finally had clothes, she no longer had to go barefoot, she had her own clean bed, the girl got a driver’s license, and she no longer needed to run and hide from anyone. She even got a kitten! And then it happened – all the papers were issued, and Tommy officially became the father of a 17-year-old daughter. And a week later, the guy became a grandfather: Kjarna gave birth to a boy who was named Caden.
“All Kjarna wants now is to give him a better life than she had. She wants a better childhood for her son, ”wrote Tommy.
The young man had to strain with all his might. He did not want to quit his studies. Tommy finished one of the seminar presentations sitting under the doors of the delivery room where Kjarna was at the time. He continued to work, because he now needed to support his family.
Tommy’s brother, Christopher, posted his brother’s story on GoFundMe to raise some money for a family that had suddenly grown so big. In the first 18 days, more than 40 thousand dollars were credited to Tommy’s account.
“To be honest, I am embarrassed by such attention. I could not do otherwise. And it’s very scary to realize that so many people have gone through similar situations, and they had no one to help, ”says Tommy.
