2016 vs 2021: Understanding how makeup has changed over the past five years

The new challenge has already thundered on TikTok and Instagram.

The new challenge, which was launched on social networks and every day there are more and more participants, is called # 2016vs2021challenge. It consists in showing how the trends in makeup have changed over the past 5 years. The girls divide their face with the help of white kayal into two parts: on one they repeat the trendy makeup of 2016, and on the second – 2021. We decided to take these two make-ups apart and see what has changed and in which direction.

Eyebrows

Of course, I want to start with the eyebrows, because this is the first thing that catches your eye. If in 2016 we all “practiced drawing”, drawing supergraphic and bright eyebrows for ourselves, now it’s time to draw not the entire eyebrow, but individual hairs. In this technique, the eyebrows are more voluminous and fluffy, but they also look much more natural. For a fashionable hair technique, it is better to use a thin wax pencil or an eyebrow marker. But if you still prefer graphic eyebrows, use lipstick or eyebrow shadows.

Eyes

Eye makeup in 2016 reminded us more of theatrical makeup: bright shadows, thick arrows and huge eyelash extensions. Now bright makeup is also in vogue, but not so complicated. In 2021, no one applies concealer to the entire movable eyelid without shading the contour, and puts a shining pigment on top. Naturalness is becoming more and more fashionable, so a thin arrow and a small highlight in the corner of the eye will make such makeup more relevant.

Foundation

Heavy, ultra-matte, dense foundations are all about 2016. Then the idea was to cover all pimples and redness by painting a new perfect face for myself. Girls with such dense means erased absolutely all imperfections and even the radiance of the skin. With such a cream, the face instantly turned into a mask. Now the lighter the foundation, the better. Satin, moisturizing and radiant foundations have been replaced by matte ones. After all, the main slogan of our time is beautiful natural and radiant skin.

Concealer

To apply concealer under the eyes in the form of a triangle is already bad manners. In this technique, the skin does not look taut, but on the contrary, it goes down, like the outer corners of the eyes. Plus this amount of concealer creates a mask effect on the face, and it looks very heavy. If you place accents, as they do in 2021, on the inner corner and brush with concealer from the outer corner to the temple, your eyes will become more lifted and even have the effect of a fox’s gaze.

Powder

The word “baking” can be confidently called the main word of 2016. Absolutely everyone has heard about this technique, but not everyone knows what it is. Baking involves applying a large amount of powder to areas that a person wants to lighten. Five years ago, everyone applied this product under the eyes and under the contour line. It was left for a few seconds and the residue was removed with a brush. Makeup in this technique looks great in photographs or on stage, but in real life it is a solid mask. Now the powder is applied in a small amount under the eyes and on areas that get greasy during the day. So the product is not visible on the face and the makeup looks very neat.

Contouring and blush

In 2016, we all contoured the face as if contouring was able to remove a few pounds for us. And most importantly, then it was considered the more, the more effective! But time passed, the technique changed, and many saw that the minimum amount of the product and its correct application work wonders! If in 2016 we applied the sculptor under the cheekbone and thereby lengthened the face, now it is more correct to apply it, on the contrary, to the cheekbone and shade only upwards. This will make your face look toned. It’s the same with blush, we now apply them not to the apples of the cheeks and closer to the bridge of the nose, but to the cheekbones and take the shading to the temples. This technique will take several years away and give your face a fresh and rested look.
