Lyme disease in Poland
Lyme disease is a tick-borne disease. The infection with Borrelia spirochetes occurs approximately 24 hours after being bitten by an infected tick. In Poland, a large increase in the incidence of Lyme disease has been observed in recent years. According to the National Institute of Public Health – National Institute of Hygiene, 20 new cases of Lyme disease were recorded in the previous year. In 614, there were 2018 cases of infection, and in 20 – 139 (data from the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate). For comparison, 2017 years ago there were about 21 cases of the disease. As Jan Bondar, the press spokesman of the Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, said in an interview with MedOnet, the greatest number of cases are observed in the voivodships of eastern Poland – Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie, Lubelskie, as well as Małopolskie and Opolskie. These voivodships usually have more cases than the national average. This is due to the fact that there are more places for ticks in these areas. These arachnids can be found in forests, city parks, meadows and green belts. Wherever their natural hosts are present.
Lyme disease better diagnosed
The increase in new cases of Lyme disease is due to two reasons. Firstly, due to mild winters, ticks hibernate shorter and shorter and begin to feed early.
– The number of ticks infected with Lyme disease continues to increase. Secondly, the awareness of doctors and patients about this disease is increasing, which is why it is more and more often taken into account in making a diagnosis, explained Bondar.
Better disease recognition translates into disease statistics.
