Head to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, soak up the rays on one of Florida’s best beaches, or enjoy summer in New Zealand. No matter where you choose to land, you’ll be happy you traveled in February.
For more ideas on where to go, see our list of the best places to travel in February.
1. Stay in an Overwater Bungalow in the Maldives
If your vision of paradise involves turquoise water lapping below your bedroom and tall palm trees lining your path to dinner, the Maldives is the perfect place for your next vacation. An idyllic wonderland that causes visitors to relax as soon as they step off the plane, this nirvana is best visited in February.
This is the driest month of the year, so you won’t have to worry about monsoons washing the sand from the soft, white beaches. And with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s Fahrenheit, sprawling on the beach for hours is a welcome activity. Other fun things to do in the Maldives in February include snorkeling, scuba diving, sailing, SUPing, kayaking, and sandcastle building.
As if the Maldives aren’t romantic enough, the magnificent isles that make up this gorgeous archipelago are peppered with iconic hotels and resorts boasting overwater bungalows. Sign us up!

2. Check out the Ruins in Mexico
If you’re hoping to escape the cold in February, a trip to Mexico is just the thing to ward off goosebumps. With temperatures in the high 70s Fahrenheit, you’ll be able to enjoy the country’s best sights without either sweltering or freezing. February is also one of the driest months, which means you won’t run too big a risk of getting wet on your fun adventures.
Head to Cancún for some well-deserved beach time, explore the impressive Mayan ruins at Chichén Itzà, or visit the Maya Museum. Still looking for activities? Head to the marina, embark on a fishing trip, or lounge on the pristine beaches in Cabo San Lucas.
While Mexico’s high season is technically December through April, the number of tourists drop off during February, so you’ll gain a bit of a break from the crowds when visiting at this time. But, the prices will still be on the higher side compared to other times of the year.

3. Visit the Southernmost Tip of the U.S. in Key West, Florida
Pretty much anywhere you go in Florida in February is going to guarantee sunshine for your getaway, but Key West should top your list. The island is at the southernmost tip of the United States, so the mid-winter temperatures are tropical, and every day can be a beach day.
There are fewer tourists to Key West this time of year, so the hotels and resorts will have more availability, and rates will start to decline by late in the month. You will also find fewer people on the beach and at key local attractions, like the home of Ernest Hemingway, and on snorkeling and boat excursions.

4. Experience Sublime Beaches & Diving in the Gulf of Thailand
Dotted with paradise-perfect tropical islands, the Gulf of Thailand should be on your travel bucket list if you love sublime beaches and diving or snorkeling in crystal-clear water. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao are the three largest islands here, and each offers something different.
February is a great time to visit as it is the driest month of the year in this region. Skies are often sunny and blue, and the humidity is less stifling than during the monsoon season. The visibility for diving and snorkeling is also prime.
Ko Samui is Thailand’s second largest island after Phuket and has been hosting tourists since the early 1980s. It offers a slew of gorgeous white sand beaches backed by turquoise seas that are calm and warm year-round. Chaweng Beach is the largest of the 11 main beaches and is the busiest. Ko Samui is also home to some of Thailand’s most luxurious five-star resorts and makes a great honeymoon destination.
Whether you’re looking for an entertainment scene or you just want some quiet time in the sunshine and beaches to relax on, head to Koh Phangan.
Koh Tao is a mecca for divers and snorkelers. It has some of the best visibility and marine life in the Gulf of Thailand. Accommodation runs the gamut from budget bungalows to luxury resorts, and many of these properties have attached dive schools where you can get PADI certified. If you don’t have time to do this, but still want to experience the underwater world through scuba, you can sign up for an intro dive that takes you to lesser depths and still allows for the chance to get up close and personal with all kinds of fish.
The easiest way to reach these islands is to hop on a flight from Bangkok to Samui International Airport. There are also international direct flights from a few nearby Asian cities including Hong Kong and Singapore. To get to Koh Phangan or Ko Tao, you’ll need to take a ferry from Ko Samui. Travelers on a budget coming from Bangkok can take a combination of bus and ferry. You’ll catch a bus to Surat Thani on the mainland and can then take a ferry directly to any of the three islands.

5. Head to New Orleans for Mardi Gras
New Orleans, Louisiana is hands-down one of the best places to travel in February, and we have Mardi Gras to thank for that. Due to its popularity (we know you’ve seen pictures of the ornate costumes, vibrant parades, and exciting celebrations), it’s advisable to plan well ahead when booking your hotel and flight. And be prepared for a bit of sticker shock. Popularity comes with higher prices, as you well know.
Despite the higher prices and large crowds, Mardi Gras is a bucket-list experience you won’t want to miss! If you are looking for a more family-friendly version of Mardi Gras events or want fewer crowds, plan your travel for the several weekends before Fat Tuesday.

6. Sightsee in the Off-Season in Madrid, Spain
The month of February is a great time to visit Madrid, Spain because it is the off-season. This means you will have fewer crowds than you’ll find during the busy summer months, as well as cooler temperatures (Spain can get quite hot), and you can find discounts on hotels and airfare.
Madrid can get chilly in the evenings in February, but there are plenty of tapas restaurants to step into for a bite to eat and to warm up. Madrid has many popular attractions like the Prado Museum and Royal Palace and Gardens to visit, so fewer tourists means that you can see more of them in less time.

7. Spend Summer in Auckland, New Zealand
February is summertime in New Zealand, and the warmest month of the year. With highs in the high 70s and lows in the 60s Fahrenheit, you’ll be pleasantly comfortable when exploring the city’s best outdoor offerings. These include taking a boat cruise around Waitemata Harbour, Climbing One Tree Hill, and touring the adorable Waiheke Island.
While it’s easy to sign up for a guided tour of the city, it’s just as enjoyable to set out on your own adventure in Auckland. Don’t miss the Auckland Bridge Climb or a stroll through the city’s many museums.
There’s a lot of spectacular ground to cover in New Zealand, so if you are a first-timer, Auckland is a great base for day trips to discover other nearby areas.
8. Ski Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Some of us love winter. The more snow, the better, right? If you fall into that category, a trip to Steamboat Springs is a must-do in February. Not surprisingly, this time of year is a popular time to visit this Colorado ski city. Another bonus: it’s a slightly less expensive spot to enjoy a ski holiday than other top Colorado ski destinations, like Vail and Aspen. With all your savings, why not plan an extra day or two to hit the slopes?
There are nearly 3,000 acres available to ski and 169 trails to traverse at Steamboat Springs. With hundreds of cabins, hotels, resorts, and lodges available, you can find accommodations to package with lift tickets, but plan your trip several months ahead to get the best rates.

9. Glide through the Snow on a Dogsled in Banff
Winter is arguably Banff’s best season. Snow blankets the region, adding a majestic feel to the air and, more importantly, presenting travelers with ample opportunities to enjoy themselves outdoors.
Whether you hope to be pulled across the snow on a dogsled, swoosh down the slopes on skis, check out the frozen falls in Johnston Canyon or snowshoe through the trails, you can’t help falling in love with Banff in February.
Unlike other Canadian ski resorts that get so cold, your breath freezes, this Albertan wonderland averages about 28 degrees Fahrenheit for the highs and 8-degree lows. Cold, yes, but not frigid! The main reason people visit Banff in February is to make the most of its fresh powder. There’s nothing like being the first one on a run at one of Banff’s best ski resorts the morning after a snowfall.

10. Immerse Yourself in Costa Rica’s Natural Attractions
Costa Rica’s high season typically runs from December through April. Dubbed “summer” by locals, this is when you’ll find amenable temperatures and little rain compared to other points in the year. This makes February a perfect time to visit if you’re looking to enjoy one of Costa Rica’s main attractions: nature.
A haven for outdoor adventurers, Costa Rica is primed for those who love to live on the edge. Zipline over a tree canopy, go river rafting, snorkel, sail, or rappel from a waterfall; the possibilities for outdoor fun are endless, especially during February.
While you’re there, don’t miss a visit to Manuel Antonio Park. You can try your luck surfing, lounge beachside, or get up close and personal with the local monkeys, sloths, and capuchins on a hike.

11. Hit the Beach in Jamaica
Every little thing is gonna be alright in Jamaica, especially if you visit during February. A warm and dry month, February is a winner if you’re hoping to lie prone on the soft sandy beaches or splash about in the azure waves all day. And be honest, who doesn’t want to do that while on a vacation in Jamaica?
Dance the day (and night) away to reggae beats, mow down on jerk chicken, and sail around the dramatic coast during a February holiday you won’t forget. Negril is a must-visit if you’re looking for a quieter vibe than the one found in the more upbeat Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.
While hitting the beach tops the list of things to do in Jamaica, make sure you save time to swim in or hike around the waterfalls, visit the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston, and treat the kids to a trip to the Kool Runnings Water Park (in Negril).
12. Tour Italy
While many tourists steer clear of Italy in February, that is exactly the reason many travel agents advocate that it’s the best time to visit. Prices are rock bottom in this off-season month, meaning that you can get affordable hotels, airfare, and travel packages.
February is the best month to visit Italy if budget concerns prevent you from visiting during the warmer months of the year. Another perk in February? Almost no crowds as you make your way through museums and travel to various cities.
February in Italy warrants special considerations to make the most of your trip. Stick with the southern regions of Italy, like Sicily, Abruzzo, Calabria, and Puglia, where the weather is more comfortable than the mountainous regions, unless you plan to take advantage of a skiing vacation. The exception to the discount prices in February is in Venice, where the Carnevale celebrations take place.

13. Take a Trip to Singapore
February is one of the most comfortable times to vacation in Singapore. This unique Southeast Asian island usually serves up oppressive heat, but the temperatures are milder at this time of year. Plus, you’ll experience less rain and humidity than you would if visiting at other times of the year.
The favorable weather makes it easy to spend hours visiting the Gardens by the Bay, Singapore Zoo, the Botanic Gardens, and Marina Bay Sands SkyPark. And if a few raindrops do fall, know that the shower will end soon. In the meantime, you can head to Bugis Street downtown to enjoy some of the city’s best shopping.
Chinese New Year occurs in February, which means you’ll be treated to incredible celebrations at Marina Bay, with dancers, brightly lit paper lanterns, and a remarkably fun festival atmosphere.

Looking for a fun way to experience France beyond climbing the Eiffel Tower in Paris or running through the lavender fields in Provence? Head to Nice to take in the famed Carnaval de Nice. In February, this romantic city on the French Riviera comes abuzz as host of one of Europe’s oldest celebrations of Carnival. The excitement runs from mid-February through early March and consists of parades, elaborate floats, fresh flowers, and captivating performers.
Spend some time in Place Messena, the old city, where many of the parades originate to experience the root of the historical Carnival celebrations. Due to the popularity of Carnival, plan your travel bookings early for the best availability.
As for the weather, pack a jacket as the lows can get down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and the highs hover around 54 degrees. But don’t worry, you shouldn’t see too much rain at this time of year.

15. Dive, Snorkel & Enjoy the Beaches of Zanzibar, Tanzania
A vacation in Zanzibar in February is one of the best times to visit this Tanzanian island. It is when you will find a dry and hot climate and unforgettable sunsets. It is the best time of the year for diving and snorkeling, when the water is at its clearest, giving you a front-row observation of sea turtles, dolphins, stunning coral formations, and other sea life.
Book a private oceanside bungalow for a luxury getaway, but be prepared to pay. This trip is well worth saving for just to have the opportunity. When you are not basking at the beach, you can tour the Spice Island farms or plan a tour through the rainforest to see local wildlife.

16. Escape to the Caribbean in St. Kitts & Nevis
Tourists flock to the Caribbean in the winter months, so it is high season in St. Kitts but it is one of the best times to visit this tropical paradise. Be prepared to pay high rates for hotels and resorts, and book at least four months in advance to get the best availability.
February in St. Kitts is sunny and dry with perfect beach conditions. Trek to the top of Brimstone Hill Fortress for a panoramic view of the island or log some time in a hammock on Cockleshell Beach on the southern tip of the island. For fewer crowds, you can stay or plan a day trip to neighboring Nevis, which has fewer accommodations but a quieter experience.
17. See the Northern Lights in Iceland
February is a perfect month to see the Northern Lights in Iceland. Nights are still long and dark, but there is more daylight than in December and January, allowing you a few more hours to explore this country’s remarkable other sights during daylight. You’ll get at least 7 hours of daylight in February as compared to around 4 hours in December.
Although it is possible to see the aurora borealis eerily cool light show from the capital of Reykjavik, light pollution makes viewing from here lackluster. It’s best to book a hotel in the capital and then take a tour to view the lights.
A better option, however, is to stay in one of the country towns of Stykkishólmur, Höfn, Seyðisfjörður, or Dalvik Akureyri for a greater possibility of seeing the lights – plus by sleeping out here you can get up at any hour the auroras start flashing across the sky, as opposed to only getting a chance of viewing them at the hours your tour occurs.
Beyond the northern lights, schedule some time to check out Iceland’s other natural phenomenon, its world-famous geothermal pools, including the Blue Lagoon, where you can warm up with a soak in the piercing blue, naturally heated mineral-rich water.
18. Discover the Best of Abu Dhabi, UAE
From a weather standpoint, February is one of the best months to visit Abu Dhabi, when temperatures are comfortable for sitting on the beach and exploring the attractions. Other times of the year, especially June through August, the sweltering temperatures can be a deterrent to going outside.
This is also a popular time for tourists because it is the most comfortable time, so plan on paying a premium for hotels, especially if you plan to stay at one of the many luxury accommodations in the city. Also, plan for crowds.
February is a great time to experience the best of Abu Dhabi, from its massive malls to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque; The Corniche area; and a visit to Emirates Palace resort, which is worth exploring even if you can’t afford to stay here.

19. See the Attractions of Zagreb, Croatia
Two great reasons to travel to Zagreb, Croatia in February are fewer crowds and more comfortable temperatures. Hotel rates will also be at their lowest. If skiing versus beaches is on your mid-winter itinerary, then you will find some of the best slopes on Mount Sljeme near the capital of Zagreb or the Croatian Olympic Center, the largest ski resort in Croatia, which you can get to by train, car, and bus from the capital city.
Stick to Zagreb and larger cities, as many hotels along the coastal villages are closed this time of year. Be mindful of the Feast of St. Blaise festival in early February and Carnival celebrations the third week in February, which could impact lodging availability.

20. Explore Manila & the Philippines
The Philippines, an archipelago made up of 7,000 islands, is known for its outstanding beaches and there is no better time to enjoy them than in February. Warm sunny days are what you can expect, but not the stifling heat that comes in April.
To take advantage of the beaches and lagoons of the Philippines without the rains and typhoons to disrupt your vacation, you can hop on domestic flights to several islands during your stay. You can start in Manila and make your way to islands like Boracay, Bohol, or Palawan for hiking and snorkeling. You can stay in the Luzon region and explore the stunning rice terraces or even visit some of the northern tribal regions that still exist.
Most people begin their trip to the Philippines in Manila and they tend to skip this city, but if you have a day consider taking a tour and seeing some of the sights. The busy capital of Manila has many museums, gardens, markets, malls, and other interesting sights.
