- Map of Resorts in British Columbia
Author Michael Law has lived in Vancouver and returns frequently to visit Vancouver Island.
It’s no big secret that one of the biggest draws for tourists to Canada is this country’s stunning natural beauty. And one of the top destinations for nature lovers to enjoy this bounty is beautiful British Columbia, more often than not simply referred to as “BC.” Travelers and adventurers are simply spoiled for choice when it comes to finding a great place to stay as they explore this vast western province.
BC’s many luxury wilderness resorts and lodges are particularly popular. These include everything from remote northern coastal lodges that are accessible only by air or water, such as the luxurious Sonora Resort, to rustic backwoods affairs that provide guests with the ultimate in refined outdoor experiences.
The best of these often extremely luxurious affairs, such as the stunning 5-star Clayoquot Wilderness Resort, even feature elegant canvas-covered suites (think “glamping,” only better) with plush bedding and furnishings, all just steps away from Mother Nature. And, of course, these wilderness lodges usually include opportunities to enjoy some wildlife spotting, including the mighty grizzly bear.
Those preferring an urban experience won’t be disappointed, either. British Columbia’s cities boast a variety of world-class luxury accommodations, from glamorous boutique inns to larger downtown affairs such as L’Hermitage Hotel in Vancouver.
Whatever your preference, be sure to refer often to our list of the top resorts in British Columbia, Canada.
1. The Wickaninnish Inn, Tofino
Accommodation: The Wickaninnish Inn
For a fabulous West Coast wilderness retreat that you can drive to, there is no better place than the resorts in Tofino. Perhaps the best known of BC’s stunning coastal wilderness lodges, the historic Wickaninnish Inn opened its doors in 1995 in Tofino and continues to offer guests an unsurpassed vacation experience. Consisting of a selection of 75 elegant accommodations, this stunning 5-star luxury inn also offers larger suites for those who need a little more space.
Whatever size room you reserve, you’ll enjoy standard features such as a large soaker tub, a real wood-burning fireplace, and a spacious private balcony with panoramic ocean views. The same scenic vistas can be enjoyed from the resort’s dining room, The Pointe Restaurant, as well as from the full-service Ancient Cedars Spa.
Outdoor fun includes swimming at nearby Chesterman Beach and exploring Tofino’s hiking trails and nearby Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. The inn has also become a popular destination in winter for its storm-watching programs. These thrilling spectacles take place over the winter months, and in addition to hot drinks to warm you up afterwards, the resort even supplies guests with waterproof rain gear to keep them (mostly) dry. Storm watching has evolved into one of the popular things to do in Tofino.
For those traveling with a pooch, a number of pet-friendly rooms are also available, but be sure to request them when booking due to availability. The resort even offers a special welcome option for visiting canines called the “Wik Pup” program. This fun pet experience includes dog sitting, bedding, a ball launcher, and a pet shower.
Parents traveling with children are also well catered to. Be sure to ask about the resort’s “Wik Kid” program. Sure to keep junior happy, these fun packages include special in-room treats; programs such as treasure hunts; and, a treat for mom and dad, babysitting services.
Note that the Wickaninnish Inn closes each year in January for about five weeks.

Located near the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere Reserve, 35 minutes by boat from Tofino, on Vancouver Island, the resort offers access to a great deal of outdoor adventure. These activities, such as horseback riding, guided rainforest hikes, and wildlife spotting among others, are all included in your room rate. Not interested in being that active? The resort is part of the Baillie Lodges group, which has invested significantly in the property. They’ve been busy. A nearly two-million-dollar infrastructure project recently saw the 25 tents renovated, the cookhouse and other common areas upgraded, and the Healing Grounds Spa reimagined.
