There are 45 freestanding villas, all built on stilts, designed to luxuriously replicate traditional Khmer village houses. The villas at Zannier Phum Baitang are large, with private terraces and gardens. Premium accommodations add even more space and their own private pools. The resort is very spread out, so each villa gets its own bicycles, that’s how you get to the main area and restaurant (golf carts are also available).

The resort has two restaurants to choose from: Bay Phsar and Hang Bay. Hang Bay, open for dinner only, is a fine-dining experience. Bay Phsar is open for all-day, mainly buffet dining from 6am to 10pm. The menu has a selection of international dishes like steak, pasta, and chicken, joined with local Khmer cuisine made with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

The rice you eat comes from the resort’s own rice fields, which produce three tons of rice each year. The herbs come from the resort’s organic herb garden, and a lot of the vegetables also come from the organic garden.

Accommodations are either pavilions or villas. Pavilions are hotel-room-like units in larger buildings. Part of the Aman group of ultra-luxury resorts and hotels, Amansara is a very polished luxury resort in Siem Reap, close to the ancient city of Angkor Wat.

The former royal guesthouse of the country’s king, it was a popular place to stay for visiting dignitaries. Jacqueline Onassis (Kennedy) stayed here in 1967, but today’s guests are people like Angelina Jolie and Bono.

It was reborn and rebuilt as an ultra-luxury resort in the early 2000s. The design of the accommodations and the public spaces is striking, a beautiful, no-expense-spared modern reinterpretation of the resort’s mid-century modern architectural roots.

The all-villa resort has three types of villas. The best have their own private pool; some have a large, private grass courtyard. They’re all open-plan design, with huge soaking tubs, and feel more like luxe apartments than hotel rooms.

Amansara’s extremely high prices come with seriously personal service and a 5:1 staff-to-guest ratio. They also come with half board – breakfast and dinner are included in the room rate. There’s a large restaurant/dining room (also beautifully designed) where you take your meals. At Amansara, it’s all about bespoke experiences. Do you want to do a sunrise balloon ride and breakfast over the temples? No problem. Do you want to visit a remote temple by Jeep and be the only one there? They can set it up. They specialize in private experiences and can take you to all the best places to see at times when other visitors aren’t there.
