“When we dream of a modern and beautiful environment, we often fall for the tricks of marketers and buy something, not wondering if we really need these things. Much of what a couple of years ago was an indicator of status and style is now time to get rid of. And even more so, you shouldn’t buy these things if you want to make your home freer and spend less time cleaning. “
1. “Slides” and TV walls
From the point of view of organizing space, this is not the best option due to the many open shelves on which everyday trifles usually accumulate. In addition, it is almost impossible to find a truly modern and beautiful example in a mass-market furniture. Better to confine yourself to a laconic console under the TV and closed cabinets.
2. Complex textiles
Openwork tulle, curtains with floral patterns and synthetic shine create visual noise and have long looked out of fashion. We choose plain options for natural colors from natural fabrics. Also, heavy canopies and lambrequins, multilayer draperies on the windows are not relevant.
3. Stuffed toys
They have long been nicknamed dust collectors, but in stores we are still gazed at with cute button eyes. And here it is important to remember that the next bear or bunny will not bring anything but a moment’s joy, and then it will go to the closet to the rest of its brothers. So is it worth spending money (sometimes, by the way, rather big ones)?
4. Monofunctional devices and gadgets
They can be useful once every six months, but they will take up space all the time. In the kitchen, these are various knives for only one type of food, forms for boiling eggs, noodle cutter, slicer, etc. This also includes a camera, a home weather station, an alarm clock ー is in any smartphone, simulators ー are rarely actually used.
An exception, of course, is possible: only if you need a gadget for professional activities or if it is your constant hobby.
5. Multivitamins and medicines “in reserve”
One of the most cluttered places in our homes is a first aid kit. Many are reassured that in which case they have “insurance” in the form of a pack of aspirin or vitamins. But it is better to tune in to health, and buy any drugs only as prescribed by a doctor, exactly in those volumes that you need for treatment. In addition, a cluttered first-aid kit will only interfere in an emergency, so I pay special attention to the correct organization of the storage of medicines.
6. Products on an industrial scale
Today there is practically not a single delicacy that could not be found within walking distance and bought as much as is needed right now. Therefore, you should not drag ten bags of food into the house, half of which may go bad before you eat it. And it makes no sense to stock up on long-term storage products like canned food and cereals.
There are discounts in stores almost every day now, but you are unlikely to save much if you have 20 shower gels and 5 different floor cleaners. The reason is the same as with products: these products expire before they go into use.
8. Water in plastic bottles
Plastic is not environmentally friendly, even if they are replaceable 20-liter bottles. There is also evidence that up to 80% of bottled water in stores is simply bottled from the tap. It is best to install a flow-through filtration system in the kitchen and draw water with you in reusable metal or glass containers.
9. Outfits for one time
A dress for a photo shoot or corporate party is much more profitable to rent: you are unlikely to want to go somewhere else in it. And if you still want to buy something smart, choose models that will fit into your main wardrobe and will serve you more than once.
10. Digital media ー flash drives, disks, etc.
They are often lost or, conversely, lying around at home idle. A convenient replacement ー cloud storage, which is accessible from any gadget and has a huge amount of memory. Payment for the annual use of the “cloud” is approximately equal to the cost of one USB stick. You can send and transfer files with simple links via email or in any messenger.
11. Future waste paper
Magazines, catalogs, crossword puzzles, cookbooks, calendars and business cards ー all this is now on smartphones and on the Internet, you can even subscribe to regular mailings of fresh issues. In addition, electronic versions are often much cheaper than paper ones.
12. Non-environmentally friendly packaging and disposable tableware
Cellophane bags, drinking straws, balloons and other little things that can be replaced for a long time with degradable or reusable counterparts. On top of that ー weigh fruits and vegetables in supermarkets in your own fabric bags and ask them to pour coffee to go into your thermostat glass.
