Positioned between New York City and Boston, The Berkshires is a rural region of western Massachusetts that is made up of 30 bucolic New England towns and villages. The historic region is known for its museums, restaurants, galleries, adventure, and, of course, the top resorts in The Berkshires.
The expansive area has many resorts to choose from, each one offering its own vibe, from wellness-oriented resorts to luxury manors that have been converted into high-end hotels. Historic inns, boutique resorts, and even popular brand-name chains can all be found within the rolling hills of The Berkshires.
Some of the main highlights of The Berkshires include its world-class museums. Lovers of fine dining will find restaurants scattered all throughout the mountain towns, while adventurers can find something to do in any season.
Summer is the perfect time to take advantage of mountain hiking and lake life, while the fall foliage in this part of the country is some of the best in the world. Skiing is big in The Berkshires during the winter, with top ski resorts nearby like Ski Butternut or Jiminy Peak.
If you’re looking to start planning your Massachusetts getaway, find the best place to stay with our list of the top resorts in The Berkshires.
1. Blantyre
Accommodation: Blantyre
Perched on more than 100 acres of rolling green space and forest, Blantyre is that quintessential elite New England country escape. Built in 1902, the Tudor-style estate conjures up images of the Old World upper crust fleeing the city for a dose of fresh air and sumptuous style.
Blantyre is made up of a Main House, Carriage House, and four cottages, all of which have been thoroughly outfitted with 21st-century comforts, but wrapped in timeless, ivy-covered charm. Inside the main house are eight guest rooms, while the Carriage House has another 11.
In addition to the elegant guest rooms, The Spa at Blantyre is famous for its long list of relaxing treatments. The spa has a sauna, while the hotel also has a fitness center and outdoor pool.
Activities are endless at this Relais & Chateaux property, from hiking and mountain biking to tennis, cross-country skiing, fishing, rafting, horseback riding, and golf.
Note: The hotel is completing a massive $90-million renovation in fall of 2022. Part of the renovations include a new restaurant.
2. Wheatleigh
Accommodation: Wheatleigh
With only 19 rooms, Wheatleigh is one of the most intimate top resorts in The Berkshires. But its size does not make it any less spectacular. The resort is fashioned as a 16th-century Florentine palazzo, with 22 acres of manicured gardens and grounds, and views extending to the mountains and a lake.
The mansion was built in 1893 and is marked by sweeping arches, dignified columns, and elegant furnishings. Picture Tiffany stained glass, fireplaces, and soaring ceilings. The grounds are equally spectacular. In fact, the gardens were designed by Frederick Law Olmstead – the same architect who designed Central Park in New York City.
Each of the 19 rooms has its own style, though the muted, earth-tone color scheme remains the same throughout. The Terrace Suite is a personal favorite for its mountain views from the expansive terrace. The bathroom has an antique soaking tub, as well. For something slightly more spacious, opt for The Aviary, which is the largest room and is split between two floors, connected by a magnificent staircase.
Of course, no trip to Wheatleigh is complete without a stop at the French restaurant, which is one of the most praised in The Berkshires. Other amenities include a swimming pool, tennis court, fitness center, and a massage service, though those looking for a full-service spa will have to look elsewhere.
