Good sound in a mobile phone was appreciated by users in the era of polyphony, and even before it. Modern smartphones can already offer much more to music lovers, and some models even claim the status of full-fledged audio playback devices. And we are talking here not only about broadcasting sound to headphones, but also playing on our own built-in speakers.
Based on the results of market research by our industry experts, the Expertology editors have prepared for you an overview of the most interesting smartphones that are relevant at the beginning of 2020, which proved to be the best in terms of audio playback.
What is meant by good sound in smartphones
To begin with, let’s clarify some points regarding what generally should be understood in smartphones and any other wearable gadgets as good sound, what exactly makes this very sound good, and what additional functions the device should have to make listening to music the most impressive and comfortable.
Let’s start with the fact that, according to the user, the sound in headphones, which is not perfect, can be such by no means due to the direct fault of the smartphone, and not even because of the poor quality of the headphones. “Ears” can be of high quality and expensive, but if they are high-resistance with high impedance, then additional amplification may be necessary for high-quality sound. If we are talking about in-ear headphones, then a large impedance starts already with 64 ohms. For overhead – from 100 Ohm. In this case, it is necessary that on the side of the smartphone there are appropriate electronics capabilities in terms of signal amplification and a capacious battery that will allow you to enjoy music for more or less a long time.
In any electronic device capable of reproducing sound, thedigital-to-analog converter (DAC). Technically, it can be implemented in different ways. The best option is if the DAC in a smartphone is a discrete module, and not an integrated circuit, powered by all sorts of emulations, processing and software. Ideally, a discrete DAC should be able to decode Hi-Res audio formats and lossless, that is, without loss.
For those who listen to music from the phone through wireless Bluetooth headphones, an extremely useful, if not necessary, factor will be support for aptX HD codecs. There are other Hi-Res support technologies for wireless data transmission, and the more your smartphone supports them, the better.
For those who like to listen to music directly from a smartphone through the built-in speakers, it is important that at a sufficiently high volume, the speakers do not start to wheeze, resonate, and “choke” in any other way. It is optimal if the smartphone contains a pair of stereo headphones, which will immediately give surround sound.
Finally, last on the list, but not least. A “musical” smartphone, by definition, must have an impressive amount of memory. First of all, operational, so that while listening to heavy audio files, the rest of the system does not slow down. Large built-in or external flash memory also does not hurt, since music needs to be stored somewhere, unless the consumer prefers to keep everything in the cloud, but this is already a secondary point.

The best budget smartphones with good sound
Traditionally, let’s start with a selection of the most inexpensive devices. It may seem strange, but among budget smartphones there really are models not only with good stereo speakers, but even with full-fledged discrete DACs. Another thing is that such models can significantly lose in other parts of the functionality, but within the framework of this review, we will not find fault with such shortcomings too much, but we will only point out obvious flaws and shortcomings. I must also say that the “budget” is relative here – we are talking about smartphones no more than 20 thousand rubles, which is also not a penny.
HTC U Ultra
Rating: 4.7
Let’s first consider a smartphone in this collection, in which, with a cursory acquaintance, it is not so easy to recognize the sound specialization. However, when studying the technical characteristics of the model, it quickly becomes clear that this is an audio smartphone with good sound.
The first thing that confuses is the lack of a normal 3.5mm headphone jack, instead of which USB-C is used. Then, the manufacturer obsessively offers special headphones native to this model. And the average consumer is used to the fact that regular headphones that come with a smartphone are rarely something worthwhile.
In fact, the situation here is as follows. This model does not have a high-impedance input. This immediately seems like a disadvantage, but in fact, all the possibilities of USonic technology are successfully implemented here – there is a continuous intellectual analysis of sound in real time and its correction on the fly, depending on the results of this analysis.
But the input data for analytical software comes from specially equipped microphones in the native headphones of this model. That is why they are so strongly recommended by the manufacturer. Moreover, the use of other “ears” is directly and rather rudely discouraged – when any other headphones are connected, the DAC is automatically turned off, and the smartphone from “audiophile” turns into the most ordinary one. Fortunately, this limitation can be easily overcome both from the hardware side – through a special adapter, and from the software side – enthusiasts have long created special applications to bypass the lock.
Now let’s pay attention to other technical characteristics of this model, and they are quite remarkable, because for its time HTC U Ultra was, if not a flagship, then one of the top models. Here we see a powerful processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 MSM 8996 Pro with a frequency of up to 2.15GHz; video processor Adreno 530; 4GB RAM; 64 or 128 GB of internal memory, depending on the modification; 12 megapixel rear camera with support for shooting video in 4K 3840 × 2160; 16MP front camera.
The 5.7-inch diagonal screen is equipped with a high-quality IPS Super LCD 5 matrix with a resolution of 2560 × 1440 and a high pixel density of 515 per inch. Glass – Gorilla Glass 5, resistant to scratches and scuffs. Autonomous operation of the smartphone is provided by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 3000 mAh. The claimed talk time of 26 hours is significantly reduced in the audio listening mode “at maximum speed”.
Advantages
USonic technology for real-time audio analysis and auto-correction;
adaptability;
stereo speakers;
quality matrix;
sufficiently powerful front camera;
full fast charging Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0;
high performance in general;
value for money.
Disadvantages
blocking the DAC when connecting non-native headphones;
quickly loses its charge in the cold, and in general, there are, although not too critical, comments on autonomy.
ASUS ZenFone Max Pro M1 ZB602KL
Rating: 4.6
The second number is another relatively inexpensive model produced by one of the trendsetters in the electronics market – the Taiwanese corporation AsusTek Computer Inc. This representative of the famous ZenFone series is positioned precisely as an audio smartphone, and it must be admitted that good sound in this model is by no means an accident, but the result of a conscious and painstaking work of engineers.
Trading platforms praise the sound characteristics of this model, emphasizing some of the exceptional qualities of external speakers – loudness with a large margin, uniformity of the amplitude-frequency response (AFC) and so on. Marketers are not lying – the drivers of the speakers here are really large compared to the nearest competitors, and are able to create a decent sound pressure. But you shouldn’t expect superpowers from speakers with such a volume of the case, and problems with resonance are also unlikely to keep you waiting.
In fact, this model deserves the “audio” prefix not only and not so much for the speakers, but for a separate amplifier chip from NXP, which is capable of “shaking” high-impedance headphones. The fact is that the high impedance of the headphones is by no means something bad. On the contrary, a bunch of high-impedance headphones and an adequate amplifier will give a noticeably better and cleaner sound than low-impedance headphones without an amplifier, all other things being equal.
Given the price and the presence of an amplifier, this model can even be forgiven for the lack of a discrete DAC (but we will still write it down as a disadvantage). The consolation will be the presence of full support for the aptX HD codec and the embedded DTS Headphone:X technology – post-processing to create a surround sound effect.
In conclusion, let’s briefly go over the other important technical characteristics. Smartphone dimensions – 76x159x8.45mm, weight – 180g. The diagonal screen size is 6 inches. Resolution – 2160 × 1080 with a pixel density of 402. Processor – 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 636, graphics – Adreno 509. RAM – 4GB, built-in – 64GB. The rear camera is 13MP, the front camera is 5MP. The rear supports shooting video with a resolution of up to 4K 3840 × 2160 at a frequency of 30 fps. Battery capacity – 5000 mAh – a clear advantage.
Advantages
large speaker drivers, high sound pressure;
a separate amplifier chip that solves the problem of high-impedance headphones;
aptX HD codec support;
overall performance;
screen image quality in FullHD;
shooting video in 4K;
capacious battery.
Disadvantages
no discrete DAC.
Highscreen Fest XL Pro
Rating: 4.5
The third and final position in the selection of the best budget smartphones with good sound according to Expertology magazine is a special offer for those who expect only good sound from a smartphone, and nothing else. Because this is a “noname” against the background of all other models in the review, and users deservedly criticize it in reviews. But it costs half the price of any of the above options, and has important advantages in terms of sound.
Let’s take a look at these benefits right away. First and most importantly, there is a full-fledged discrete DAC. Rather, it is not entirely discrete, as it is integrated into a single system with an analog signal amplifier. But, at least, in one way or another, it is a separate device. The advantage in this approach is high sound quality, the minus is a relatively small margin of volume.
This is about the sound on the headphones. With the sound from the case, the situation here is already less joyful – the only speaker is not of the highest volume. That is, in general, the configuration is much inferior to top-end specialized models, but the cost for many buyers will justify all the inconvenience and trouble.
Let’s now pay attention to the rest of the characteristics of the hardware of the smartphone. The dimensions of this model are 81.5x153x7.8mm and the weight is 167g. The screen size in diagonal is 5.5 inches. The screen is equipped with a fairly high-quality IPS-matrix, but with a not too impressive resolution – up to 1280 × 720 with a pixel density of 267PPI. The rear camera is 13MP, the front camera is 8MP. Processor – MediaTek MT6737T on four cores with a frequency of 1450 MHz. Video chip – Mali-T720 MP2. RAM in the amount of 3 GB. Built-in memory – 32GB. The capacity of the lithium-polymer battery is 300 mAh (non-removable). There is a fast charging function.
The smartphone supports two microSIM cards with alternate connection and all the most popular communication standards from GSM900 up to LTE-A Cat. 4.
And one more thing – this model was announced back in July 2017, so at the beginning of 2020, the smartphone may not be available in every store, but it is still quite available on many online trading platforms.
Advantages
discrete DAC;
IPS matrix;
fast charging function;
LTE support;
really high-quality sound in headphones;
the most affordable price for a smartphone with a discrete DAC.
Disadvantages
one and not too powerful speaker;
small margin of volume;
low resolution matrix.
The best mid-range smartphones with good sound
The second selection in the review of the best smartphones with good sound according to Expertology is the most voluminous, as it reflects the expectations of the widest strata of potential consumers. Here, our experts have selected models costing up to approximately 30 thousand rubles, which have more advanced capabilities in terms of audio playback, and in general are newer and “fresher”.
Meizu Pro 7
Rating: 4.8
We will start with the most inexpensive model in this category, which is not far from the budget options in terms of price. And this is all the more pleasant, because for its time it was a real flagship. Meizu Pro 7 was announced in the second half of 2017, and during this time it has significantly lost in price, remaining, though former, but the flagship.
Let’s move on to what we are most interested in – the multimedia capabilities of the device. There are stereo speakers installed here, which sound a little quieter than the more expensive version of the Pro 7 Plus and a little less bass. But speakers are the tenth question, and the most valuable thing in this model is the discrete 32-bit Cirrus Logic CS43130 DAC. The beauty of it is that it also contains a built-in headphone preamp.
A smartphone with such multimedia hardware is capable of providing output power up to 30mW per channel with a resistance of 32 ohms. A DAC with a preamplifier can even “beat” headphones with an impedance of 600 ohms, but then the power will be minimal – no more than 5mW. This model keeps the dynamic range at the level of 130 dB, the sampling frequency is 384 kHz. All these figures clearly hint that Meizu Pro 7 is able to shake even very “heavy” headphones.
Let’s analyze the rest of the characteristics of the smartphone. This model measures 70.72×147.62×7.3mm and weighs 163g. The diagonal screen is 5.2 inches. The resolution of the SuperAMOLED matrix is 1920 × 1080 with a pixel density of 424PPI. On the back side there is a small auxiliary screen with an AMOLED matrix of 536 × 240 pixels. There is also a dual rear camera of 12 megapixels each in a pair. Front camera – 16 megapixels.
The electronics of the device is based on the eight-core processor MediaTek Helio P25 (MT6757T). Graphics – Mali-T880 MP2. RAM – 4GB. Built-in memory – 64GB. A lithium-ion battery with a capacity of only 3000 mAh, and even a non-removable one, is a frank minus of this model. For a flagship, and even a “musical” one, this is clearly not enough. But at least there is a fast charging function via USB Type-C. Another quite significant part of users emphasize the dampness and obvious “negligence” of Flyme OS, an operating system that was specially designed for Android-based Meizu gadgets.
Advantages
flagship at an affordable price;
discrete 32-bit DAC;
headphone amplifier built into the DAC;
additional color LCD screen on the back side;
matrix SuperAMOLED;
double chamber;
fast charging function;
metal case.
Disadvantages
disadvantages of the Flyme OS software shell.
Battery capacity.
Xiaomi Mi 9 SE 6 / 128GB
Rating: 4.7
The second number in this selection is the smartphone of the “people’s” brand Xiaomi, and this will be the least “music” solution in this group. The model was included in the review solely because it still has some advantages in terms of sound, while being a flagship and a novelty in 2019. So this is not a smartphone for sophisticated audiophiles, but for those who need a flagship no older than 2019 with high-quality sound wirelessly.
About the sound from the case in the context of our current topic, there is little good to say about this model. There are no stereo speakers here, but the regular speaker gives surprisingly good sound and has a large volume margin. The hardware part also cannot boast of a discrete DAC and amplifier. But here, Broadcast Audio and TrueWireless Stereo Plus technologies are soundly implemented, which provide improved sound transmission quality over Bluetooth. So, the owners of Bluetooth headphones will definitely feel the difference between the sound in the “ears” of music from a regular smartphone and Xiaomi Mi 9 SE.
Smartphone dimensions – 70.5×147.5×7.45mm, weight – 155g. The body is metal. The screen size in diagonal is 5.97 inches. Matrix – AMOLED with a resolution of 2340 × 1080 and a dot density of 432PPI. Processor – eight-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 712. Graphics – Adreno 616. RAM installed 6GB, internal memory – 128GB. The configuration of the rear cameras is the most “fashionable” to date, that is, triple – 48, 8 and 13 megapixels. Allows you to shoot video in 4K resolution 3840 × 2160. Powerful front camera – 20 megapixels.
The battery capacity in this model is almost the same as in the previous one – 3070 mAh, but here this is no longer a disadvantage, since power consumption is obviously lower, not least due to the absence of discrete DACs and an amplifier. The fast charging function is also available – Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+.
Advantages
flagship 2019;
high quality sound in wireless headphones;
good speaker sound with a large margin of volume;
6GB of RAM;
triple rear camera and powerful front;
shooting video in 4K;
fast charge;
metal case.
Disadvantages
no 3.5mm headphone jack
no discrete DAC and amplifier.
Meizu 15
Rating: 4.6
The third number in the selection of the best mid-range smartphones with good sound is another model of the Meizu brand – the Meizu 15 is very noticeable with its sophisticated design. But in addition to the design, there is also powerful hardware support for the highest quality sound in headphones.
From the side of the body in Meizu 15, there is nothing particularly outstanding. Full-fledged stereo speakers are not provided, but even what is there sounds very decent, and even a stereo pair is created – a conversational speaker is also connected to the multimedia speaker during playback.
The most interesting part of the sound still happens in the headphones thanks to discrete devices – a DSP Hexagon 680 digital signal processor for sound processing, a Cirrus Logic CS35L35 amplifier, a Qualcomm Fluence noise suppressor. This “great trio” takes listening to music on headphones from your smartphone to a completely different level. The sound is extraordinarily detailed with clear and not cut high, juicy bottoms.
Here it is worth clarifying that the Hexagon 680 DSP is not a DAC, but a special subsystem contained in the Snapdragon 660 CPU itself. There is no discrete DAC in this model, but it gives such high-quality sound that even sophisticated users often cannot believe that all this happens without a “free-standing” DAC. There is also a proprietary application with presets, where you can make additional sound settings to suit your own tastes and preferences.
Now for the rest of the specifications. Dimensions of the device – 72x143x7.25mm, weight – 152g. The screen diagonal is 5.46 inches. Matrix – AMOLED with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 and a dot density of 403PPI. Dual rear camera 12 and 20 megapixels. Front camera 20MP. Processor – Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 with eight cores. Graphics – Adreno 512. RAM – 4GB, built-in – 64GB.
Unfortunately, this model has a common “disease” – not too capacious, as for such a hardware configuration, the battery is only 3000 mAh. But, at least there is a fast charging function Meizu Super mCharge. Also, some users complain about the lack of an NFC module – the percentage of those who need this function is growing every year.
Advantages
exceptionally high-quality sound in headphones;
powerful hardware support for sound (digital signal processor, amplifier, noise reduction);
fast charging function;
face recognition;
powerful camera configuration;
appearance.
Disadvantages
Battery capacity;
user complaints about the lack of NFC.
ZTE Axon 9 Pro
Rating: 4.5
The review of the best smartphones with good sound in the middle price category continues with a remarkable model of the well-known Chinese manufacturer of telecommunications equipment ZTE Corporation. The company is known for its increased attention to the quality of the reproduced sound produced under this brand of smartphones.
ZTE Axon 9 Pro is a model originally aimed at those who prefer (or under duress) to listen to music directly from the smartphone case, that is, from the built-in speakers. Even the previous generation of this series, the Axon 7, already boasted universal recognition as a smartphone with some of the best speakers on the market. In Axon 9 Pro, the situation is even more attractive.
A full-fledged stereo pair is built into the smartphone – high-quality speakers with a long resource. They produce a clear and loud sound, have a decent volume margin. When developing each model, significant intellectual resources are aimed at minimizing all kinds of “artifacts” of sound – resonance, wheezing, and so on. The Axon 9 Pro also received full support for the Dolby Atmos stereo effect. It was a strange decision of the developer to abandon the standard headphone minijack, especially since there is enough space for it in the case. For the most part, users are dissatisfied with this circumstance, and rightly so.
Now about other characteristics of this model. Case dimensions – 74.5 × 156.5 × 7.9mm, device weight – 179g. The screen diagonal is 6.21 inches. Matrix – AMOLED with a resolution of 2248 × 1080 and a dot density of 402PPI. Two rear cameras – 12 and 20 megapixels. Front camera – 20 megapixels. Video shooting is supported in 4K resolution 3840 × 2160 at a speed of 30 fps. Processor – Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with eight cores at a frequency of 2.8 GHz. Graphics module – Adreno 630. RAM installed 6GB.
In this model, it is already pleasing that the manufacturer, although not too generous with the battery capacity, did not stint, as in the case of the two previous models. It has a 4000mAh non-removable battery. Fast charging is also available – Qualcomm Quick Charge 4+.
Music lovers are still upset that in this model it was decided to remove the discrete DAC, although it was in the previous version. But, again, we value this model primarily for the sound from the speakers, and a dedicated DAC in this case would have produced an almost imperceptible effect.
Advantages
one of the best speakers on the market;
Dolby Atmos stereo effect support;
support for Hi-Fi audio;
fast charging function;
dual rear camera;
6GB of RAM;
video recording in 4K;
autonomy.
Disadvantages
no DAC;
There is no standard headphone jack.
LG G7 ThinQ 64GB
Rating: 4.4
The next in a large selection of smartphones with good sound in the middle price category is an extremely interesting model of the LG brand. When it comes to sound, the LG G7 ThinQ is a true double whammy, as the developers paid equal attention to both the sound of the speakers and the sound reproduction in the headphones.
First, about the speakers. Gadget manufacturing companies have different approaches to ensuring high volume sound of cabinet speakers without distortion. LG decided to go in a revolutionary way – to use the resonance effect to increase the volume and some other improvements. By installing a resonator with a volume one and a half orders of magnitude (15 times) larger than that of any other, even expensive smartphone, the creators of the LG G7 ThinQ have ensured that the surface on which the smartphone lies acts as a reflector, a sound amplifier and, in addition, also emphasizes the bottoms. In addition, volume is also added.
For high-quality interaction with headphones, this model provides a discrete DAC Saber ES9218PC manufactured by ESS Technology. Its characteristics in the context of the rest of the configuration of the LG G7 ThinQ are so good that they received the highest marks from experts, and at the presentation of the model about the “superpowers” of the smartphone in terms of sound, Mikhail Borzenkov, editor-in-chief of Stereo & Video magazine, personally spoke about high-quality sound and a recognized audiophile in a good way. He personally vouched for the fact that this model, like no other, is capable of transmitting high-quality sound to high-impedance headphones. Independent tests fully confirm the words of the expert.
Let’s go through other important characteristics of the hardware of the device. Case dimensions – 71.9 × 153.2 × 7.9mm, weight – 163g. The screen diagonal is 6.1 inches. Matrix – IPS with a high resolution of 3120 × 1440 and a pixel density of 563 per inch. A pair of rear cameras of 16 megapixels each. Front camera 8MP. The processor is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with a frequency of 2.8 GHz. Graphics module – Adreno 630. RAM – 4GB. Built-in – 64GB.
And again we see a picture when the manufacturer clearly limits the user’s capabilities by installing an obviously weak battery for such a powerful configuration – 3000 mAh. There is a fast charging function via USB Type-C. And this is the first smartphone in our review, equipped with at least some kind of water protection.
Remarkably, there is a normal familiar 3.5mm headphone jack. Against the background of strange refusals from such a convenient solution in many models, the presence of a minijack can soon be qualified as a direct advantage.
Advantages
large resonator;
using the surface to improve sound quality and volume;
discrete digital-to-analog converter of the highest quality and wide possibilities;
the ability to “shake” high-impedance headphones;
a high resolution;
water protection.
Disadvantages
weak battery.
LG V40 ThinQ
Rating: 4.4
Completing the selection of the best mid-range smartphones with good sound according to Expertology magazine is another LG device, and this is also a representative of the ThinQ line, like the previous one. But the difference is significant, since the V40 is the flagship, and in this collection it is the most expensive model. It came out relatively recently – at the end of 2018, and at that time it cost almost $ 1000. Now it’s half the price.
In terms of sound, the LG V40 ThinQ inherited all the good and sometimes wonderful things that pleasantly surprised in the G7 described above. Here we see a Saber ES9218PC discrete DAC from ESS Technology. The same large resonant chamber, itself amplifying the volume and bass. In addition, the technology of using resonance with the surface is implemented here in the same way to increase the volume and create volume – a smartphone lying on a hard surface with the back side will sound up to 100dB. It is slightly disappointing that the manufacturer decided to get by with one, albeit a very good and powerful boombox, instead of a full-fledged stereo pair.
But all the best in this model in terms of sound is still in the headphones. Here, Saber ES9218PC with an amplifier work out at 100%, broadcasting clear sound with deep lows and full highs even on high-impedance headphones. Also in this model the effect of “three-dimensional” sound DTS:X 3D Surround Sound is implemented. And what’s more interesting, even recording through a microphone is not easy here – the device can record immediately in FLAC format.
This model is even slightly larger than the previous one. Dimensions – 75.8 × 158.8 × 7.8mm, weight – 169g. The screen diagonal is 6.4 inches. Matrix – OLED with a resolution of 3120 × 1440 and a dot density of 537 per inch. On the back side there are three cameras 12, 16 and 12 Mpix, on the front side there is a dual camera 5 + 8 Mpix. The processor is an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with a frequency of 2.8 GHz. Graphics – Adreno 630. RAM – 6GB, internal memory – 128GB.
The weak point of this model is expected and even somewhat traditional – a 3300 mAh battery does not “take out” such powerful hardware if you use it at least 2/3 of its full capacity and still listen to music through the speakers.
Advantages
advanced discrete DAC;
large resonator;
a solid surface under the back increases the volume and enhances the bass;
wireless charger;
high resolution matrix;
a lot of RAM and built-in memory;
dual front camera;
water protection;
Disadvantages
instead of stereo speakers, one Boombox;
weak battery.
The third category in Expertology’s list of the best smartphones with good sound includes two examples of the most expensive premium smartphones. And here there will already be a shift in evaluation priorities towards premium. That is, the high cost in this case does not automatically mean the best sound. These models are suitable for those consumers who are primarily interested in a high-class device, and only then a good sound. However, in fairness it should be said that there are practically no real premium smartphones with frankly bad sound. And the presented two models have quite specific and noticeable advantages in this regard.
Samsung Galaxy S9+ 64Gb
Rating: 4.9
And the first to consider another miracle of Korean high-tech production, which Samsung pleases lovers of high-quality gadgets every spring. The Galaxy S9+ is a slightly more advanced version of the Galaxy S9. In terms of sound, the capabilities of both versions are comparable.
Galaxy S9 + received a full-fledged stereo pair – high-quality and powerful speakers, in the development of which a prominent Austrian audio manufacturer, AKG Acoustics GmbH, played a key role. Dolby Atmos technology has been intelligently implemented and adapted, which creates an unusually colorful surround sound that creates a realistic presence effect.
Dolby Atmos effects are also available in the bundled headset, but if we talk about the sound in headphones, then it will be more important to have a high-quality DAC with 32bit/384kHz sampling. The DAC, among other things, also has its own settings, in which you can achieve the most smooth sound of audio files by enabling forced upsampling. Special thanks deserve the fact that the developers did not succumb to dubious fashion trends and did not remove the usual standard 3.5mm headphone minijack.
The smartphone itself is a well recognizable Galaxy in style, but with natural improvements over the previous generation. Smartphone dimensions – 73.8×158.1×8.5mm, weight – 189g. The screen size in diagonal is 6.2 inches. The matrix is AMOLED with a resolution of 2960 × 1440 and a pixel density of 531 per inch. A pair of rear cameras 12 and 12 megapixels, front – 8 megapixels. The rear part can record video in 4K 3840 × 2160 quality. In the international version, the Exynos 9810 Octa processor is installed on eight cores with a frequency of 2.7GHz. RAM 6GB, built-in – 64GB.
And even here we are faced with a strange manufacturer’s economy on the battery. The Samsung Galaxy S9+ has a 3500mAh non-removable battery, which is clearly not enough for a day of full load. But at least there is Qualcomm Quick Charge 2.0 fast charging and wireless charging.
Advantages
advanced discrete DAC with its own settings;
clear flawless sound in headphones;
full stereo speakers;
Dolby Atmos surround sound technology;
high performance in general;
fast charge;
wireless charger;
water protection.
Disadvantages
weak battery;
unsystematic, but frequent small comments from users.
HTC U12 Plus 128GB
Rating: 4.6
The review of the best premium smartphones with good sound is completed by the brand model with which we started our review. Only there it was a cheap smartphone, but here it is the most expensive.
This luxury smartphone in narrow circles is called “the main sound”. And if such a wording can be regarded as too pretentious, then the statement that the HTC U12 Plus has “unique sound capabilities” is more like a very serious conclusion.
However, in reality, this premium model has essentially inherited everything good and not so good from the aforementioned Ultra series, with the addition of some features that are truly unique in places. The speakers have received a major upgrade. If earlier it was a powerful stereo pair, which guaranteed an excellent and loud sound, now there are three sources – a stereo pair at the bottom and a tweeter at the top. This equipment is called Boom Sound Hi-Fi Edition. Sounds really smooth, clean and deafening. In any open space, a smartphone will not need a portable speaker.
Now about the sound in the headphones and everything that precedes it. HTC is one of the most ardent apologists for the rejection of the standard 3.5 minijack, so it’s not even close here. Exactly the same as in the Ultra series, the use of non-native headphones is not encouraged here. Other “ears” can only be connected via an adapter or wirelessly. Fortunately, support for the aptX codec will provide high quality “wireless sound”.
A unique feature in this model is the ability of standard headphones to adapt to the individual shape of the listener’s ears. To do this, you need to insert the headphones into your ears, run a special calibration application. It will turn on the track and recognize the shape of the auricles by the reflected waves, after which it will make the appropriate adjustments to the settings.
Device dimensions – 73.9×156.6×9.7mm, weight – 188g. The diagonal screen size is 6 inches. The matrix is IPS, and for this class of device this is already a disadvantage, since in our time the use of any technology in premium smartphones, but not OLED, is already bad manners. Matrix resolution – 2880 × 1440, pixel density – 537 per inch. On the back side, a pair of cameras 12 and 16 megapixels, on the front – 8 megapixels. The rear pair can shoot video in 4K 3840×2160. Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with 8 cores at 2.8GHz. Graphics – Adreno 630. RAM 6GB, built-in – 128GB.
And here, again, we see a clear lack of battery capacity – only 3500 mAh. Given the same power of the speakers, the “energy policy” of manufacturers is becoming less and less clear from a consumer point of view. There is a fast charging function – Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0.
