Sci-fi thriller by Eric Bress “Butterfly Effect” 2004 is considered the best work of the director, and in the filmography of Ashton Kutcher and Amy Smart, this film became the brightest spot.
The theory that any influence on the system can have unpredictable consequences was played up so well that the picture deservedly became a classic and is recommended for viewing by everyone without exception.
It is also noteworthy that the thriller has as many as 4 endings, from happy to rather tough.
The original film received two sequels with other actors, but none of them even came close to the first part.
Fortunately, cinema is rich in other works that are similar in concept. We have collected 10 films similar to The Butterfly Effect, some of which you have probably seen, but a couple – the other may be a discovery.
10 Donni Darko (2001)
The story of a high school student who sees a strange man dressed as a sinister bunny is Richard Kelly’s directorial debut. He was lucky to get the lead role of Jake Gyllenhaal, who just fit perfectly into the image.
At first, the film was received coolly and even barely earned at the box office and on DVD, but over time it acquired cult status. Donnie Darko – a film for those who love a difficult plot, leaving behind a lot of questions for reflection.
9. Reality Changers (2011)
At the heart of a sci-fi thriller “Reality Changers” lay down Fiip Dick’s novel The Adjustment Team, published in 1954. Starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.
The plot tells about a world in which there is nothing accidental: all events are prescribed by the Supreme (a kind of Architect of the local “Matrix”) and people actually live not as they want, but as destined for them.
One meeting of the main characters takes place outside this plan, changing the general concept of their life. Now they have to go through many trials so as not to lose each other, despite all the obstacles.
8. Time Error (2014)
Thriller “Mistake of Time” cannot boast of star names on the poster: a little-known director Bradley King and the same lead actor Daniel Panabaker. However, this cannot be called a disadvantage: the picture captivates with its originality and a minimum of cliches.
Three friends live quite ordinary lives, trying to improve their affairs. Everything changes when they find a strange device in their neighbor’s apartment across the street. This machine is aimed at their homes and takes daily photographs of them 24 hours into the future.
After finding the neighbor’s body, they hide his death in order to use his invention to their advantage, unaware of how dangerous attempts to change the future can be.
7. Time Loop (2012)
Rian Johnson in the director’s chair, Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt in the lead roles – this is already enough to interest the viewer. And if you add to this the famously twisted plot behind the authorship of the same Johnson, then you get a film for all time.
The plot of the movie “Time loop” in short, this is: in 2074, it became impossible to kill a person with impunity, so the mafia began to use an illegal time machine.
The victim is tied up, silver bars are attached to her back and sent to the year 2044, where the killer is already waiting for her, who does his job and takes the bars as payment. If the bars are gold, it means that the looper (as the killers are called) has just killed himself from the future and “closed the loop”.
Most orders go through without incident, but sometimes killing yourself is not so easy…
6. Mr. Nobody (2009)
The main character of the film “Mr. Nobody” already 118 years old and he recalls his life, talking about it as several parallel ones. The peculiarity of the tape is that it asks a lot of questions, but does not give a single answer, allowing the viewer to decide for himself.
The main idea of the picture is that the fate of each person depends on the choice made: sometimes even the wrong decision in the end can lead to a positive outcome.
It is noteworthy that “Mr. Nobody” is not a product of the Hollywood film pipeline: the film was shot in Europe with the participation of France, Canada, Belgium and Germany. Actors, however, Hollywood – Jared Leto and Diane Kruger in the lead roles.
5. Back to the Future (1985)
The classic from Robert Zemeckis needs no introduction: there are very few who have not seen at least one part of the cult franchise.
The adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown in the past and future will forever remain in the hearts of those who grew up in the 80s and 90s, although the film still looks more than worthy.
In recent years, it has become fashionable in Hollywood to do reboots and remakes of old films (often this turns into a failure), but the creators “Back to the Future” firmly stated that they would not allow touching their offspring while they were alive.
4. Deja vu (2006)
Thriller “Deja vu” Directed by Tony Scott, Denzel Washington investigates a terrorist attack on a ferry that killed 543 people.
Along the way, he learns about the existence of a portal to the past and wants to change it, although the scientists working on the device talk about the dangers of such games with reality.
Will the hero manage to convince everyone, despite the risk, to create a parallel timeline? The viewer will find out the answer to this question at the very end of the film, and in the end, much will turn out to be completely different from what it seemed in the course of history.
3. Time Patrol (2013)
Movie protagonist “Time Patrol” played by the charismatic Ethan Hawke, he works for the Time Bureau, an organization that deals with crime prevention.
Having failed to catch a dangerous bomber (the only criminal who cannot be caught), the protagonist receives the last task before retiring and goes to New York in the 70s of the last century. Here he has to meet a man who was born a woman and even gave birth to a child, sort out several temporary paradoxes and save a couple of lives.
2. Carefully! Doors are closing (1997)
Romantic drama “Carefully! Doors are closing” director Peter Howitt plays with the theme of “possible worlds”, depending on the choice made by a person and the development of events.
In one scenario, Gwyneth Paltrow’s character arrives home just in time, where she finds herself in a classic situation: she finds her lover in bed with another woman. In another scenario, she is late for the subway, so the unfaithful guy manages to send his mistress out and his betrayal remains a secret.
The picture is perfect for those who are tired of sci-fi thrillers and want something simpler: a drama about love, infidelity and accidents will definitely not let you get bored.
1. Premonition (2007)
