Northeys is an old polar research station used by the British North Greenland Expedition from 1952 to 1954.

Verkhoyansk is the city with the biggest difference between minimum and maximum temperatures. In 2005, even a memorial was opened in the settlement, associated with the 120th anniversary (since 1885) of the registration of the lowest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere.

3. Oymyakon, Russia, -71,2 °С

Another Russian settlement competing with Verkhoyansk for the title of “Cold Poles of the Northern Hemisphere“. The village is located in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) at an altitude of 741 meters above sea level.

According to a number of factors, the Oymyakon Valley is the most severe place where a permanent population can live. However, a little less than 1000 people are recorded each year.

On February 6, 1933, the lowest temperature in the Northern Hemisphere was recorded in this village – it is -67,7 °C. However, in 1926, in one of his diaries, geologist S. V. Obruchev wrote that in the village Oymyakon recorded a temperature of -71,2 ° C, near the Chersky ridge. But since this information has not been documented, it cannot be officially accepted as true.

2. Vostok station, Antarctica, -89,2 °С

East is a Russian Arctic station founded on December 16, 1957 and located at an altitude of 3488 meters above sea level. The thickness of the ice located under the station is about 3 km.

Climatic conditions in this area can be called one of the most severe on Earth. During the whole year there are severe frosts. On July 21, 1983, the lowest temperature on the planet from all meteorological stations of the 20th century was recorded at the station – -89,2 ° С. The highest temperature of the station is -13,6 ° C on December 16, 1957.

Due to the high altitude, there is a sharp lack of oxygen, and because of the low temperature, the pressure drops more and more with each meter.
