When it became known that Luc Besson was making a new film for a lot of money (budget of almost 200 million euros), many were delighted: the director is talented, Cara Delevingne and Dane Dehaan are capable actors, so it should turn out great.
But everything turned out not so unambiguously, although from the point of view of visual design there are no complaints about the tape – it is magnificent.
If you, like us, liked Besson’s creation, then we present 10 more films similar to “Valerian and the city of a thousand planets».
10 Star Trek: Retribution (2013)
«Star Trek: Into Darknessis the twelfth installment in the Star Trek universe and the sequel to the 2009 Star Trek film, the second installment in the reboot of the franchise.
In 2259, Captain James T. Kirk was removed from command of the USS Enterprise for violating the Prime Directive after providing the ship to the primitive inhabitants of the planet Nibiru to save them and Spock from a catastrophic volcanic eruption.
Admiral Christopher Pike is reinstated as commander and Kirk is demoted to first officer.
Shortly thereafter, the 31st Squad’s installation in London was bombed by Starfleet operative John Harrison.
Harrison attacks the Starfleet headquarters and this sets off a chain of events and adventures that the main characters have to go through.
9. Avengers: Infinity War. Part 1 (2018)
Thanos continues to stubbornly go towards his goal and collects the Infinity Stones, and the Avengers squad is trying with all his might to prevent him and protect the remaining artifacts.
Despite their best efforts, the titan still gets his way and snaps his fingers, after which.. What happened next is better to see.
If suddenly for some reason you still haven’t watched “Avengers: Infinity War. Part 1”, then you urgently need to fix it. Everything here is top notch: the drama, the battles of the earthlings against the army of Thanos, and the ending leaves you sitting with your jaw dropped when you watch it for the first time.
“Avengers: Endgame”, by the way, turned out no worse, because it is in this film that we finally say goodbye to a couple of superheroes who will no longer be in Marvel blockbusters.
8. Suicide Squad (2016)
Director David Ayer in his “A squad of suicides“collected real stars: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne, Jai Courtney, Jared Leto and others. It can be seen that he tried his best to make a film that could compete with Marvel products, but, alas, it turned out poorly.
Logical holes in the plot and the general absurdity of the story put an end to the drama that the creators were trying to escalate, but it’s still worth watching the tape.
To see Jared Leto in the image of the Joker, admire the foolish Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, and once again make sure that DC has nothing to oppose their competitors so far.
7. Venom (2018)
It is unlikely that the name Ruben Fleischer will tell you something, but it was this director who directed the film about the most principled opponent of Spider-Man.
Thanks to the fact that they managed to attract Tom Hardy to the main role, the film turned out to be excellent: tough and cynical humor (not the level of Deadpool, but still), a charismatic hero and a lot of unexpected situations.
The plot, of course, turned out to be drawn out, and the final fight between the two Venoms is more like a fight between two spots of paint, but the pluses outweigh.
It remains to be hoped that the second part will turn out no worse, although it will not be directed by Fleischer, but by Andy Serkis – the same Gollum from The Lord of the Rings.
6. Ender’s Game (2013)
In the future, humanity is preparing to launch an attack on the homeworld of an alien race called the Beetles, who have attacked Earth and killed millions.
The official invasion was stopped by Mather Rackham, who did so at the cost of his life. For 50 years, the International Fleet has trained gifted children to command a new counterattack fleet.
Cadet Andrew “Ender” Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) catches the attention of Colonel Hiram Graff (Harrison Ford) and Major Gwen Anderson (Viola Davis) as he displays incredible abilities in simulated space combat.
They order to remove the monitor from him, which means the end of the cadet program and the beginning of the main plot of the film “Ender’s Game».
5. Ready Player One (2018)
The sci-fi film directed by Steven Spielberg tells about the near future: in 2045, the planet is heavily overpopulated and the real life of many people is devoid of joy, so they plunge headlong into the virtual OASIS simulator.
Its creator hid an easter egg inside the game that everyone wants to find, since in this case the player will receive $ 500 billion and full control over the huge OASIS corporation.
The main thing that makes the film remarkable is the huge number of references to popular culture of the end of the last century and the beginning of the current one: “Terminator”, “King Kong”, Freddy Krueger and many other cult works are mentioned in one way or another in the plot of the tape “Ready Player One».
4. Star Trek (2009)
«Звездный путьfollows James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto) as they cruise through space aboard the USS Enterprise as they battle Nero (Eric Bana).
Captain Nero is a Romulan from his future who threatens the United Federation of Planets. The story takes place in an alternate reality created by the time travel of Nero and the original Spock (played by Leonard Nimoy).
The alternate timeline was created in an attempt to free the film and franchise from established continuity restrictions while still retaining the original story elements.
It turned out not quite perfect, but in general, the restart cannot be called a failure.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
Now the names of Groot, Rocket, Star-Lord, Gamora or Drax are known to everyone, and in 2014 only comic book fans knew them.
Screen “Guardians of the Galaxy” was a rather risky undertaking, but James Gunn did not let us down and created a new franchise.
In this film, the viewer is introduced to each of the characters and shows how such a motley company managed to become one team and even save millions of lives.
2. The Fifth Element (1997)
The cult comedy fantasy action movie by Luc Besson, which opened the way for the young Mile Jovovich to big cinema.
Bruce Willis, Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker and Ian Holm did even better in their roles, so the result is a movie of all time.
Another 10, 20 or even 50 years will pass, and the phrase “Lilu Dallas, multipass” still will not be forgotten, as well as the extraordinary appearance of the main character.
1. Jupiter Ascending (2015)
The focus of the filmJupiter ascending– Jupiter Jones (Mila Kunis), an ordinary cleaning lady and Kane Wise (Chening Tatum), an interplanetary warrior who informs Jones that her destiny extends beyond Earth.
Quite a typical story about the next “special”, which we have already seen enough in the “Hunger Games” and “Divergent”, but thanks to the signature style of Lana and Lilly Wachowski, the tape is perceived completely differently.
