Unknown director Adam Robitel recruited equally “popular” actors and for only $ 9 million in 2019 made the film – “Claustrophobes”, which suddenly became a hit. He earned 155 million at the box office and acquired a powerful fan base, although critics for the most part did not appreciate him.
In any other genre, most likely, there would have been a failure, but horror films that are experiencing a second youth allow you to “shoot” even with a minimum of money and big names on the poster.
The continuation of the story about a group of people participating in a deadly quest will be released on April 17, 2020, and to brighten up the wait before the premiere, we offer you 10 similar films to Claustrophobes, the plot of which keeps you in suspense.
10 Death Quest | 2018
Quest rooms, which have gained wild popularity in recent years, are excellent material for creating a thriller, and if you add a little mysticism, you get “Death Quest”.
The game, which began quite harmlessly, gradually develops into a real struggle for life, and serious trials await the father and daughter.
A modest budget in this case plays into the hands of the atmosphere of the picture: everything looks realistic and lively, without an abundance of graphics and special effects.
Many critics noted that if the creators had more money, they would have made a third-rate horror film, and so, in conditions of total economy, they had to turn on their imagination and give all their best.
9. Survival game | 2012
From the filmmakers “Survival game” was 28 million dollars, so they could afford to invite famous actresses to the main roles: Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Carpenter (“Dexter”).
The plot as a whole is also not bad: a girl is kidnapped by a maniac, she runs away, but the police do not believe her because of her mental instability.
Leaving the clinic a year later, she continues to search for the kidnapper, who also did not forget about the fugitive and kidnaps her sister. Now the heroine has to save her, at the same time proving to everyone that she is not crazy.
Despite all the pluses, the tape failed at the box office, earning only 18 million. Critics did not appreciate the screenplay ideas (which are sometimes really banal and stupid), and also went over the acting of some characters with a skating rink.
8. Cube | 1997
Six people who do not know each other come to their senses in a room, not remembering how they got here.
There are several exits from the room, most of which are traps. Flamethrowers, acid, sharp blades – these are just a few of the “charms” waiting on the way if you go in the wrong direction.
Not everyone will be able to get out of this labyrinth of rooms, but sitting still is also not an option: there is no food or water.
Banal at first glance, the plot is replete with unexpected twists, which sometimes lead to a stupor.
A minimum of clichés and “pianos in the bushes” are the main advantages of the film, for which it was awarded a number of awards and beat off the production budget many times.
At the tape Cube there is also a sequel and a prequel, but they no longer reach the level of the first part.
7. Quest | 2016
Another story about a group of people who decided to diversify their leisure time and go through what they thought was a fun quest.
None of them even imagined that instead of team interaction and solving puzzles, pain, suffering and tears awaited them.
At the time of the film’s release “Quest” remained virtually unnoticed, but is now gaining more and more popularity.
6. Experiment “Office” | 2016
One afternoon, the office of the Belco Corporation is locked down with 80 employees inside. The Mysterious Voice orders to kill two in half an hour, otherwise he will kill more.
People do not believe, but everything turns out to be serious: after 30 minutes, four die. It turns out that everyone has a bomb in their head that the Voice can activate.
His new task is to kill 30 people, otherwise 60 will die. A difficult choice divides colleagues into two camps, but only one can survive in this hell.
Сюжет “Experiment “Office”” built around an experiment to study the behavior of people in an extreme situation, but in some places it is played rather rudely. This was the reason that the picture collected only 10 million dollars, which, however, was enough to cover production costs (budget 5 million).
5. Claustrophobia | 2017
On his birthday, the protagonist receives an original gift from his beloved girl – a certificate for visiting a popular quest room. Gathering friends, Tyler goes on an adventure that turns out to be deadly.
Gradually, the puzzles in the quest become crazier and the guys understand that the main thing is to survive until the morning.
Here again you will not find big names in the cast and will not see an “expensive” picture, but you can tickle your nerves worrying about the characters. Let the actors “Claustrophobia” and not the most eminent, but they play soundly, without slipping into senseless tantrums.
4. Trap Farm | 2007
Four talented mathematicians find themselves in an abandoned house, the owner of which introduced himself as the Farm. They do not know each other, but they have to solve a difficult task together, otherwise they will all face a painful death.
The farm locks them in a room, the walls of which begin to gradually narrow, and if a solution is not found in time, they will simply be crushed. Such an environment spurs not only the characters, but also the viewer, frozen in tension.
A peculiar flavor is also brought by the fact that the film “West Farm” filmed by a Spanish director with Spanish actors, and this greatly distinguishes it from its Hollywood counterparts in the genre.
3. Saw: Survival Game | 2004
The series already has 8 films (the 9th part will be released in the spring of 2020), but the very first is considered the best. James Wan filmed it for just $1,2 million and planned to release it straight to DVD, but the Sundance success changed his mind.
Eventually “Saw” collected 103 million at the worldwide box office, which was a resounding success and launched a whole conveyor for the production of sequels.
The franchise is now the highest grossing horror franchise ever, grossing nearly $1 billion, and its impact on popular culture is hard to measure. Jigsaw references, music, plot twists and many other elements from Saw can be seen in dozens of paintings.
2. Exam | 2009
If you’ve been to job interviews, you’ll agree that sometimes they can ask weird questions. However, the final exam, which will be passed by eight candidates for work in a large company will give odds to any interview.
A strange environment, a guard with a weapon, incomprehensible rules and mortal danger – after going through this, you will no longer want to work here. Although, as is often the case, in the end everything will not be what it seemed.
1. Hut in the forest | 2011
Let’s end with a film that stands out from the crowd. The genre of thrillers and horror films has its own rules and canons that are usually followed, but “Shed in a woods” spits on them and goes his own way.
The plot twist is brazenly (and deliberately) copied from Sam Raimi’s The Evil Dead, which is why the viewer expects banalities, but in fact receives a whirlpool of unpredictable events.
A group of 5 students go on vacation to a forest hut, where they are closely watched by a group of researchers.
At first glance, everything is typical, but you can hardly predict how the heroes will get out of trouble.
Even the controversial ending has an alternative version in which the film ends differently, that is, the creators tried to please everyone.
