Genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration

We say «genius» about a person who has reached unprecedented heights in his Cause, made a significant contribution to its development and received public recognition.

Traditionally, the concept of genius is associated with talent, innate abilities, genetic predisposition.

I offer an alternative point of view based on the research of M. Gladwell, published by him in the book «Geniuses and Outsiders».

Gladwell’s theory is that there is a certain pattern in when a Master becomes a Master, receives public recognition and the status of a «Genius». Namely, in the presence of a certain, as the pilots say, “flight hours”. And this statistically confirmed «plaque» is 10 hours of practice.

We will agree that in the future in the article the concepts of «Genius», «Genius» and «Master», «Skill» are identical.

examples:

Mozart — an unconditional genius with phenomenal hearing and memory.

He worked in all musical forms, and in each he achieved success.

He began writing music at the age of 6 and gave the world more than 50 symphonies, 17 masses, 23 operas, as well as concertos for piano, violin, flute and other instruments.

A genius? — Yes.

What’s behind the scenes: few people know how much work and effort Mozart’s father put into its development. From the earliest years.

Of the concertos wholly owned by Mozart, the earliest, considered great (No. 9. K. 271), was written by him at the age of twenty-one. By this time, Mozart had been composing music for ten years.

10 years. 10+ hours of practice.

Judith Polgar — Hungarian chess player, grandmaster, one of the greatest chess players in the world.

An absolute genius in chess.

From early childhood, children were systematically and deeply taught chess by their father, a psychologist and teacher Laszlo Polgar.

By the time of world recognition — 10 hours of practice.

The Beatles — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr — who changed the sound of popular music in the sixties.

Geniuses? — Oh yeah!

Few people know that by the time they entered the American stage, since 1957, the group had more than 1 (!) Concerts.

Mostly in Hamburg, where they had to play 8(!) hours a day.

By the time the group appeared in America, where its victorious march around the world began — 10 hours of practice.

Bill Gates.

Genius? — Definitely.

From the seventh grade, I had the opportunity to receive 6-15 hours a day of practice in handling a computer and developing programming skills.

By the time Microsoft was created — 10 hours of practice.

Tiger Woods.

Golfer. One of the greatest athletes of our time. The world’s first billionaire athlete.

The golf club was in his hands when he was 9 months old. By the time of world recognition — 10 hours of practice.

I suggest you look, my friend, at achieving the status of «Genius», at the recognition of genius from the other side.

  • Yes, inborn abilities are important, talent is important.
  • Very — the most important — the starting conditions that parents give.
  • And — the topic of this article — «a raid of hours.»

But not just a “cloud of hours”, but a conscious one.

with an ambitious goal.

With a sense of mission and purpose.

With daily results.

For me, genius is the formula for real mastery, genius = «ikigai» (Japanese concept meaning a sense of one’s own purpose in life) + «Flying hours».

Finally, some fun math:

10 hours is approximately 000 days.

We take the length of the working day 8 hours, then 10 u000d approximately 1250 days (3,5 years).

Minus holidays, holidays, etc. = 5 years.

Minus procrastination, distractions = 8 years.

How old are you my friend?

What do you aspire to be a Master at?

When did you start working in this direction?

By answering these questions, what will you change in your movement towards true Mastery?

Practice is everything. Work!
