Butterbur to prevent migraine attacks
In herbal medicine, standardized extracts of butterbur rhizome (Petasites officinalis) to prevent and treat migraine attacks. Two clinical trials published in the early 2000s demonstrated the effectiveness of this herbaceous plant in preventing migraine. In the oldest study1, daily intake of standardized butterbur extracts (Petadolex®) for 3 months significantly reduced the frequency of migraine attacks. The second try2 clearly confirmed the results of the first, participants who took 150 mg of butterbur extract every day for 4 months saw a sharp drop in migraine attacks.
Dosage : People more prone to migraine attacks can take between 50 mg and 75 mg of standardized extract of butterbur with a meal, twice a day for 2 to 4 months.
Good to know : In its raw state, butterbur contains substances (= pyrrolizidine alkaloids) which are toxic to the lungs and liver. Standardized extracts of butterbur rhizome, on the other hand, are not dangerous and are very well tolerated by the body. |
