I was a bit worried about writing this text. I was afraid that I would be accused of exaggeration and I would receive comments such as: it is really impossible to eat anything anymore, because nutritionists demonize everything. However, I decided to take a risk.
I like to eat healthy because I feel good about it. Of course, it’s not like I refuse to eat anything unhealthy. I try to find a balance and not go to extremes. I chose 10 products that I try to avoid for various reasons. The most common reason is simply the nutritional value, composition of the product, but sometimes there is also a feeling of well-being after consuming these products.
No.1: ‘light’, ‘zero’ cola drinks
This is a clear example of products, which, despite the lack of calories, may harm our health. Apart from the sweet taste and, for some, it is almost addictive add nothing positive to the diet. We wrote more about it in the article: ‘We’re exposing cola drinks – you still want to drink them?’
# 2: Tortilla from a fast-food restaurant
Ingredients: wheat flour, cheese, lettuce, tomato, cream sandwich sauce, tomato sauce or ketchup with glucose-fructose syrup in the composition, breaded and deep-fried chicken.
Nutritional value (portion): 491 kcal, 3,3 g of salt (norm 6 g)
I avoid because it contains: • glucose-fructose syrup • cream sauce • high-mill flour • breaded meat • deep-fried • and so personally I feel very bad after it
No. 3: Milk sandwich
I approach the recommended products with caution, e.g. by state institutions. Sometimes I wonder on what basis the given product received a positive opinion. These include, for example, Mleczna sandwich, about which I also wrote in the text: ‘Milk sandwich or milk start? – we evaluate ‘, the quoted article also includes the composition of the product. Anyway, very extensive. Unfortunately, the composition is not impressive.
I avoid because: • In second place is glucose-fructose syrup, but also sugar • In my personal opinion, zero natural healthy ingredients • I am not convinced by the argument of the Institute of Mother and Child that it is a better product because it has ‘added value’, i.e. it is enriched with minerals and vitamins
No. 4: Grain Sweets
We are more likely to buy wholesome or whole grains in the name. Then it seems to us that such cakes are definitely healthier than the typical ones covered with caramel or chocolate. I dare say that they are often much worse than those typical, widely misjudged sweets.
For example, such cereal Sasanki from Lidl. Oatmeal cookies with sesame seeds. The name suggests that it will be a healthy product, because oats and sesame are great ingredients. And looking a little deeper, it’s not that full of health anymore.
Ingredients: sugar, vegetable oil, water, E471, E475, lecithin, E202, E330, flavor, beta-carotene, wheat flour, oat flakes, sesame, E203, E500, salt
Nutritional value (about half of a 100 g package): 485 kcal, 20 g of fat (1/3 of the daily requirement)
I avoid because: • The first ingredient is sugar and fat, often hydrogenated fat, and the base ingredient from the product name is in trace amounts
No. 5: Sweetened flakes and also “fit”
Everything that is “fit” is worth taking a closer look at, because in addition to whole grain cereals, such products are abundant sugar and glucose-fructose syrup. Therefore, in my opinion, they are a sweet snack and not a base for a healthy, wholesome breakfast.
No. 6: Diet bars
Did you notice that the fitness bar weighs 37,5 g? Why is it so small? Because it would not be fit if it had more than 150 calories. With this weight, such a cereal snack is relatively low in calories, because it does not exceed 150 kcal. But is 1 such bar for a snack enough for us?
No. 7: Fruit yogurt
If I want to eat fruit yoghurt, I buy plain yogurt and add jam to it. Of course, the jam is sweetened with sugar, but it is home-made, without thickeners that are unnecessary in this case. You can also simply use fresh, frozen or dried fruit instead of jam.
No. 8: Chocolate-like products
If you eat chocolate, use only the one that is first in the composition ‘cocoa liquor’, and one of the ingredients is too cocoa butter. This is not only nutritious chocolate, but also the tastiest chocolate on the market. I like sweets. I always tell my pupils, if you want to be tempted by something sweet, let it be the sweetness of the highest class and taste, not just anything. Eating just any chocolate does not bring so much satisfaction and sometimes we regret being tempted, and in fact, the taste was not crazy. Not only did we disturb the diet, but it is still a product of little value. We wrote more about which chocolates to choose in the text: ‘Which chocolate is the best?’
No. 9: Multigrain Bread
Whole grain, multigrain, 6 grains and other terms appear on grain products. Are these terms unambiguous? Not. However, many consumers think so. He buys multi-grain bread, thinking it is whole grain bread. Multigrain, 6 cereals or other similar names are usually wheat bread colored with caramel or malt with the addition of grains or seeds to resemble wholemeal bread.
No. 10: Margarine
I grew up on butter. I use them to spread on bread, sometimes for cakes. There is no margarine in my kitchen. I have always been a supporter of moderate use of various goods. Just like I am a supporter of eating sweets, but good ones and the head is similar to butter. I believe that it is a much more natural product, although it has saturated fatty acids and cholesterol, but also vitamins A and E and some minerals. Butter is also many times tastier than margarine. The main thing is not to abuse it, spread it thinly, replace it with vegetable pastes from time to time.
What kind of products do you have that you don’t buy and why?
