Film “Cruel” turned out to be ambiguous: on the one hand, it does not bring anything new to the genre and contains a lot of clichés, and on the other hand, it looks easy and does not leave an unpleasant aftertaste. We decided to collect 10 more films similar to “Cruel”, which are also ambiguous: they did not receive awards, many went straight to DVD, but at the same time they are interesting to watch.
10 Sinners Have No Saints (2011)
Mickey O’Hara is a dedicated member of the IRA, but his days of fighting for freedom are long gone and now he is forced to deal drugs and give up on life. When another deal goes wrong, things take a turn for Mickey and he has to kill his partner.
Marked for death, Mickey flees to Los Angeles, determined to start over and leave his violent past behind. When a close friend of his runs into some powerful drug dealers, Mickey temporarily resorts to his old skills to help him out of trouble. However, instead of doing better, Mickey unwittingly sets off a chain of events that awaken the ghosts of his past and threaten to destroy everything he holds dear.
«Sinners don’t have saints”is a film about the fact that life is rarely unambiguously black and white: most often there are halftones, half-malice and half-kindness.
9. Because we are a gang (2008)

After several years in the criminal business, Ged Brennan (Scot Williams) is ready to become a law-abiding citizen, but to start a new life he will have to capitalize on one last robbery. 8. An Eye for an Eye (2008)
In the center of the plot of the South Korean drama “Eye for an eyeis veteran police detective Baek Sung-chan, who is preparing to retire to start his own business. 7. Say (2014)
Ethan Tell is a little swindler who manages to hit the jackpot and steal $1 million. Ironically, his life takes a drastic turn for the worse when he discovers that stealing the money was the easiest, as he must now keep it while his partner in crime, his wife, and the parole officer attempt to rob Ethan himself.
In the original filmSay” is called “Tell”, which echoes the name of the protagonist – Tell. In the Russian localization, this zest was lost due to language differences.
6. Sushi Girl (2012)
Abandoned by her boyfriend in Tokyo, American girl Abby (Brittany Murphy) finds her calling in an unlikely place: a local restaurant run by a tyrannical chef who speaks no English.
Unafraid of the chef’s rudeness, Abby convinces him to teach her the art of making ramen, and despite the hilarious clash of cultures and personalities, she learns to put her passion and soul into cooking while trying to get her life back on track.
And let’s mention localization again: in the original, the film “Sushi girl” is called “The ramen girl”, which is more true, since in the story she learns to cook ramen (wheat noodle soup), and not sushi. Due to the fact that this dish is practically unknown to us (although it is very tasty), it was replaced with more popular sushi.
5. One Move of God (2014)
Korean neo-noir filmOne move of God” tells about a gambler in go (an ancient board logic game, one of the five World Mind Games), who loses a large amount. He is framed, accused of murdering his brother and put in prison for 7 years. Having rewound his term, the hero longs for revenge, for which he gathers a team.
4. Punishment Squad (2013)
Directed by Keoni Waxman and written by Richard Beatty and Michael Black. Starring Steven Seagal, Ving Rhames and Danny Trejo. “Punishment Squad” was the fourth joint project of Steven Seagal and Keoni Waxman and, it should be said, not the worst.
The plot is banal: the crime boss wants to leave gangsterism in the past and retire, but he is challenged by another authority who wants to take his place on the throne of the underworld. Now the hero and his faithful companion will have to take up arms and show who is the boss in the house.
Filmed for 10 million dollars, the action movie passed the cinemas and was immediately released on DVD.
3. Shooting (2002)
Film “Shootingtells the story of two young men, Biggs (played by Kai-Mani Marley, son of Bob Marley) and Wayne (Spragga Benz), who grow up together on the tough and dangerous streets of Kingston, Jamaica. As children, they rob a van filled with drinks and shoot the driver. The money from the robbery is used to buy visas to the United States, where they continue their criminal activities, but already on the streets of Miami.
Twenty years later, Biggs is deported to Jamaica, where he and his friends Wayne and Mad Max, also deported, begin to extort money from business people. Confronted by the police and politicians, they all return to Miami together, where they are informed that the city has a new “king” – Teddy Brooke Jester (Louis Rankin). The trinity of friends decides to profit at his expense, which will lead to fatal consequences as a result.
2. Saint George’s Day (2012)
Notorious cousins Mickey Mannock (Frank Harper) and Ray Collishaw (Craig Fairbrass) run a large London firm and run illegal businesses. Their position in the capital’s gangster underworld is threatened when they lose a shipment of cocaine belonging to the Russian mafia.
To get out, they plan a daring heist in Berlin: if successful, it could pay off the debts and secure them for life, but they only have one chance. With the cops and Russians on their tail, the last thing they want is a snitch in the gang, whom they suddenly discover.
View «Saint George’s Day” stands at least because of Charles Dance (he played Tywin Lannister in the Game of Thrones), who is magnificent here as always.
1. Set up (2011)
In Detroit, three friends, Sonny (50 Cent), Dave (Brett Granstaff) and Vincent (Ryan Phillippe), plan a daring heist. Their plans turn deadly when Vincent betrays his accomplices by shooting Sonny and Dave, who dies on the spot.
Sonny manages to survive and is now looking for revenge by teaming up with the most dangerous mafia boss in town (Bruce Willis), at the same time wanting to return the money that his former partner stole.
In addition to Bruce Willis, “Setup” boasts a rather vigorous action, besides, the film runs less than an hour and a half, so the narrative simply does not have time to “sag”.
