10 best vitamins for diabetes
In people with diabetes, the body is weakened, so such patients especially need complex therapy. Together with an expert, we made a rating of inexpensive and effective vitamins for diabetes and discussed who and why should take them.

Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by a syndrome of chronic hyperglycemia (excess of sugar in the blood). The main goal of treating diabetes is to keep blood glucose levels close to normal.1. And for this, of course, it is very important to establish the patient’s eating behavior.

And this is where the problem arises. Not only that, against the background of various processes in the body, the absorption of vitamins worsens, but because of the correction of the diet, a person receives fewer vitamins with food. According to the results of a study at the Research Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, most patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were found to be deficient in vitamins and minerals, which affects the risk of developing this disease and its complications.2

“The lack of vitamins and microelements in patients with diabetes is noted not only due to dietary restrictions, but also due to the intake of certain hypoglycemic drugs,” notes PhD, doctor endocrinologist of the highest category Zumrad Ramova. – So, metformin disrupts the absorption of vitamin B12, folic acid, and SGLT inhibitors can provoke calcium deficiency.

That is why it is necessary to take additional vitamins for diabetes.

How to choose vitamins for diabetes

Vitamins are prescribed by the doctor, based on the patient’s complaints and tests, – emphasizes Zumrad Ramova, candidate of medical sciences, endocrinologist of the highest category. – Almost all vitamins have their contraindications. For example, vitamin D is not recommended for sarcoidosis. Vitamin E is not recommended for prostate hyperplasia. B vitamins are not recommended for patients with vascular neoplasms.

The compositions of many complexes include other components with their own characteristics. For example, galega (medicinal plant) has a side effect – it can cause neoplasms of the adrenal glands. In my practice, there were such cases, so I do not prescribe dietary supplements with galega in the composition.

In addition, sweeteners that are included in some vitamin complexes are not recommended: sorbitol, xylitol, aspartame, cyclamate, as they increase polyneuropathy.

You also need to consider that vitamins are water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble, as a rule, do not accumulate in the body. Fat-soluble ones accumulate, so with uncontrolled intake, you can literally get poisoned. For example, you can not drink carrot juice every day – deaths are described in the medical literature. There is a lot of vitamin E in vegetable oil, therefore, if a person consumes enough of it in food, then there is no need to take additional vitamin E – this is dangerous.

And most importantly, do not self-medicate. Regarding the intake of vitamin-mineral complexes, it is necessary to consult a doctor.

Doctor’s comments

Some experts attribute the increase in the incidence of diabetes mellitus to multivitamin deficiency, for example, to a lack of vitamins A, E, C, group B. They refer to the statement that vitamins do not work “alone”, they are involved in various processes in the complex. Accordingly, some physicians prescribe multivitamin supplements to patients with diabetes.

Other doctors, on the contrary, believe that there is no proven benefit from taking multivitamins for people with diabetes.

In any case, before taking this or that complex or drinking individual vitamins in a course, you should consult your doctor.

Popular questions and answers

The topic of rational nutrition and saturation of the body with nutrients in diabetes is especially popular. Our expert Candidate of Medical Sciences, endocrinologist of the highest category Zumrad Ramova answers the most popular questions.

Which vitamin lowers blood sugar?

Vitamins by themselves do not lower blood sugar levels. For patients with diabetes, they are prescribed as needed to make up for the deficiency of specific nutrients, and not to reduce sugar.

Is it possible to drink vitamin D3 with diabetes?

– Vitamin D3 is prescribed strictly according to indications. For understanding: an overdose is much worse than beriberi. In addition, if there is a complication of diabetes – chronic renal failure, then cholecalciferol will not help. It is necessary to take alfacalcidol at the doses prescribed by the doctor.

Is it possible to drink fish oil with high sugar?

– Fish oil is not worth drinking, based on your own considerations. The doctor should prescribe the supplement if he sees the need. In addition, a person cannot choose the correct dose on his own, so you should trust a specialist.
