Seborrheic dermatitis is a skin disease associated with increased secretion of sebum (1). Problem areas are limited to areas of skin with a large accumulation of sebaceous glands. These are the scalp, auricles, face, chest, upper back, skin folds.
If we talk about hair, then there are three types of the disease (2):
- “dry” type (simple dandruff),
- “fatty” type (stearic or waxy dandruff),
- inflammatory (exudative) type.
By itself, seborrhea (hyperactive sebaceous glands) is not the direct cause of dandruff. But it provokes the development of seborrheic dermatitis, when, under the presence of circumstances (for example, hormonal disorders), yeast-like fungi multiply in the mouths of the hair follicles. The first “flag” signaling a disease is dandruff.
According to some reports, the incidence of seborrheic dermatitis in adults is 1-3%, and in newborns – about 70% (3).
As a rule, by the age of one year, the problem goes away on its own. But at an older age, when hormonal changes begin in the human body, seborrheic dermatitis is often chronic or recurrent with periodic exacerbations throughout life, treatment is indispensable (4).
As part of a comprehensive solution to the problem, doctors recommend the use of medicines. We will tell you about the best shampoos for seborrhea for children, and our expert will share tips on how to choose a great product and what other measures you need to take in order to finally enjoy a quality result.

How to choose a seborrhea shampoo for children
Seborrhea shampoo packages for children and adults are full of labels, beautiful promises from manufacturers and marketing “tricks”. But their composition, as a rule, differs slightly. At least when it comes to tools that can really help. The active substances in shampoos are the same in most cases, the difference is only in concentration and additional, auxiliary, components.
“Children’s cosmetics is a specific product, strict requirements are imposed on it, dictated by the characteristics of the child’s body and the child’s sensitive skin,” notes dermatologist, children’s dermatologist, trichologist Nataliya Zhovtan. – Children’s skin is several times thinner than the skin of an adult. Due to the weak development of the basement membrane, the epidermis easily exfoliates from the dermis, and the imperfect hydrolipid membrane can be destroyed due to exposure to potent substances. In addition, the function of the sweat and sebaceous glands is not fully formed in the child, and the pH of the skin (6,7) is close to a neutral environment, which reduces its protective functions. Therefore, for the treatment and prevention of seborrhea, the content of cosmetics and medicines is especially important.
When choosing one or another shampoo, you should pay attention to the presence of selenium disulfide or DS in the composition. If the manufacturer has not indicated the permissible age for using the product, then, by law, it refers to cosmetic, which means that it is allowed for use as a general rule from the age of 14. But in practice, dermatologists have been prescribing such remedies for 6 years.
Shampoos with ketoconazole are officially recommended for use from the age of 12, but they are also prescribed at an earlier age, since puberty, and with it seborrhea, occurs earlier. Zinc shampoos can also be used to treat and prevent dandruff. In any case, each patient is individually selected drugs, treatment regimen and other recommendations. The same shampoo may not be suitable for different teenagers. Therefore, you do not need to self-medicate, if necessary, immediately contact a specialist – a trichologist or dermatologist.
Popular questions and answers
Dandruff – a seemingly simple problem, can give rise to many questions. Our expert, Natalia Zhovtan, dermatologist, pediatric dermatologist, trichologist, cosmetologist, venereologist, mycologist answers the most popular ones.
What components in the composition of shampoo for seborrhea for children should be avoided?
● artificial fragrances (perfumes), which can cause allergic reactions to cosmetics, so special fragrances are used for hypoallergenic cosmetics – most often these are natural essential oils;
● glycerin, which makes dry skin even drier;
● lanolin – dries the skin and can cause allergic reactions and rashes;
● sodium lauryl sulfate – can contribute to hair loss, dandruff, acting on hair follicles, forms an irritating film on the skin of the body and hair, causes allergic reactions;
● sodium loret sulfate – causes allergic reactions, forms carcinogens in combination with some other substances;
● loramide – dries hair, causes itching and allergic reactions;
● petrolatum – by holding liquid, it prevents the release of toxins, waste and interferes with the penetration of oxygen;
● propylene glycol – penetrates the skin, damaging cell membranes, causing rash and itching;
● mineral oil – retains not only water in the skin, but also toxins, carbon dioxide and waste products that must be excreted through the skin; slows down the growth and development of cells, prevents the penetration of oxygen into the skin, causes dry skin, inhibits natural moisturizing mechanisms, causes acne and rashes in children.
Salicylic acid in hair products is not recommended for children under 3 years of age, with the exception of shampoos. We also do not prescribe tar shampoo to children, since the carcinogenic effect of tar has been determined, it causes dryness and tightness of the skin, and children do not like its specific smell.
