How to choose a mosquito repellent for children

– Repellents for middle-aged children should have a low DEET content (less than 10%). For younger children, use products based on IR3535, which are also suitable for pregnant and lactating women, advises Vladislav Zyablitsky, pediatrician, head of the children’s clinic of the maternity hospital No. V.V. Vinogradov.

– The label of the insect repellent should indicate the age for which it can be used and the time of protective action. When applied to the skin, the duration of exposure is usually 2-3 hours. By the way, there are no approved products that last more than four hours. The packaging of the repellent should also indicate how to apply it: for example, spray only on clothing or on skin, and so on. It is good if the number of the certificate of state registration with numbers and the letter “U” is indicated on the package. This means that the repellent has been tested and does not pose a threat to the health of children.

General rules that are relevant for any age:

  • it is necessary to test a new repellent for the presence of an allergic reaction (since the composition contains various excipients, fragrances, etc.);
  • the agent is first applied to dry clothes, and then put on the child;
  • choose a repellent should be in accordance with age;
  • do not apply the product near wounds, on burns, abrasions and cuts;
  • avoid contact with food;
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after applying repellent.

Answers questions from readers of Healthy Food Near Me pediatrician at the clinic of evidence-based medicine DocDeti Ekaterina Kiryushina.

How do repellents work and who do they protect against?

Repellents are products that affect the sense of smell of insects. They cease to perceive the smell of the treated object and lose interest in it. Repellents do not save from all insects: most often they are effective against mosquitoes, midges, fleas, ticks, but do not work on stinging insects. When you’re out in nature, the hornet won’t be fooled by the spray, and repellents with picaridin or low concentrations (less than 20%) of DEET may not be effective enough against ticks. You should not choose them if you are planning a forest walk.

From what age can repellents be used and which ones are better to choose?

Most instructions from manufacturers limit the use of effective means to the lower age limit – 1 year. Young children are recommended to be protected from bloodsuckers with clothing and mosquito nets. But according to foreign recommendations (CDC, AAP), you can use repellents for children older than 2 months: for example, DEET and IR3535.

DEET is considered the most effective and most studied substance. It occurs in various concentrations. The higher the concentration, the longer the action: 10% – 2 hours, 24% – 5 hours. Can be used in children from 2 months, for pregnant and lactating women. Examples: Gardex Baby, Gardex Family, Gardex Extrem, Moskitol, Off. You need to know that DEET reduces the effectiveness of sunscreen.

Picaridin is less effective than DEET. Apparently does not protect against ticks. There are no studies on use in children. Examples: Off, Reftamid Expert.

IR3535 is a synthetic repellent. Can be used in children from 2-3 months. Not recommended in malaria endemic areas as insufficient data on efficacy against mosquito vectors of this disease. Examples: “Mosquitol Baby”, BioUD, “My sun”.

Fumigators with metofluthrin in the composition are quite effective, but for the sake of safety, it is best to use them in well-ventilated areas. Examples: Off, Raptor.

Bracelets, electronic (ultrasonic, vibrating) devices, vitamins, strong-smelling products and most preparations based on aromatic oils (with the exception of lemon eucalyptus oil) do not work or their effect is worse than others. I recommend choosing something else.

Lemon eucalyptus repellents work about as well as weak DEET solutions. Should not be used on children under 3 years of age.

How to properly apply protective equipment so as not to harm the child?

Use sprays only outdoors, as directed. Here are some general rules.

• Do not apply to the skin what is intended for fabric.

Update at the right time or don’t update at all, depending on age.

• Do not spray the repellent on your face: it is better to apply the product on your hands and then lubricate your face.

• Do not apply to skin under clothing.

• Do not let children apply repellents themselves.

Upon returning from the street, it is better to wash off the repellent.

Remember that the effectiveness of the repellent decreases after swimming and physical exertion.

The best combination is permethrin for stroller/clothes + DEET for skin.
