The Oscar for an actor is like the Ballon d’Or for a football player: the highest award, once again confirming talent.
With a football award, the Academy Award statuette has another thing in common – controversial winners and losers. Sometimes the name of the laureate does not raise any doubts, but sometimes you just want to ask: “Well, what did he do to deserve it”?
This question is especially relevant when you look at the names of actors who have not received a single award over decades of their career, although there are many worthy works in their asset.
Today we’ll talk about a dozen of these, remembering the world-famous and famous Hollywood stars who have so far been deprived of an Oscar.
10 Jim carrey
Those who know the actor exclusively from comedies like Dumb and Dumber, Bruce Almighty and Ace Ventura may be surprised to see him in the selection, but he is absolutely deserved.
In addition to the comedies that made him famous, there are at least a few strong dramatic roles in the asset (take at least “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”), which show all his diversity.
Jim Carrey was nominated for the Golden Globe 6 times and won twice, was a BAFTA nominee and a bunch of other awards, but he was never even nominated for an Oscar. Is this fair? Definitely not.
9. Robert Downey Jr.
Incredibly talented actor, firmly bogged down in the swamp of Marvel. Blockbusters, of course, turn out to be a feast for the eyes, and they bring a lot of money to him, but real fans know that he is capable of more.
In 1993 and 2009, he was nominated for an Oscar, but both times the award passed him by. Since then (after the drama “The Judge” with him and Robert Duvall), he has been filming mainly in superheroes, for which he definitely will not be awarded an award, and he does not subscribe to anything else.
In 2020, he will try on the image of Dr. Dolittle, but this role will definitely not bring him an award either. Perhaps after the end of the epic with Thanos, Robert will finally begin to consider other proposals.
8. Keanu Reeves
Everyone’s favorite, the hero of many memes and just a great actor, Keanu Reeves did not even get close to the Oscars. Moreover, he does not even have nominations for the Golden Globe, but this is hardly upsetting him.
Having conquered the world with the role of the Chosen One, he forever inscribed his name in millions of hearts, and this means much more than some kind of award.
In recent years, he has been busy mainly in comedies and the John Wick action series, so he is unlikely to appear on the list of nominees or winners in the near future.
7. Rafe Fiennes
Another talented actor who has a whole scattering of nominations and not a single award, not counting the BAFTA and the Tony Theater Award.
He was nominated for an Oscar twice, and was nominated for the Golden Globe 5 more times. The last award is mentioned for contrast: it is generally considered to be the second most important, so it is even more surprising that such gifted actors do not even have it.
6. Harrison Ford
Archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones and smuggler Han Solo – these two heroes are familiar to everyone, although Ford has other equally outstanding works in his credit.
For example, the role in the 1985 thriller Witness, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for the only time in his career.
After that, he never made it to the list of applicants, but he has great chances for a statuette: in the coming years, he may well be awarded an honorary award for his contribution to the development of cinema.
In 2002, he already received the Golden Globe for these merits, after 17 years it’s time to give something more serious.
5. Benedict Cumberbatch
The Briton with an extraordinary appearance equally successfully proved himself both in big cinema and on television, where he starred in several popular TV shows.
In addition to the sensational “Sherlock”, last year’s “Patrick Melrose” deserves attention, in which Cumberbatch once again wiped his nose with all skeptics. H
As for the Oscar, he only had a chance to get it once: in 2015 he was nominated as the best actor for the film The Imitation Game, partly based on the biography of Alan Turing.
4. Edward Norton
The American actor, who will celebrate his 50th birthday this year, has been nominated for the Oscar three times, always deservedly and with a chance of winning.
The first time it was in 1997 with the film “Primal Lies” (he claimed the statuette for Best Supporting Actor), after another 2 years there was “American History X” (here already a nomination for the main role), and in 2015 – ” Birdman again in the Best Supporting Actor category.
3. Ed Harris
Veteran of Hollywood, on whose account there are more than a hundred roles, including those worthy of the main film award.
The first time the actor was nominated in 1996 for a minor role in Apollo 13, the second time three years later, again for a minor role in The Truman Show. Just imagine how this film was “rolled”: they cheated not only Jim Carrey, but also Harris, who perfectly played the manipulator on the other side of the dome.
After that, he was nominated twice more: with the films “Pollock” and “The Hours”, but again left with nothing. Total: 4 nominations and all by.
2. Tim Roth
This Briton became famous thanks to his collaboration with Quentin Tarantino, in whom he played in the films The Hateful Eight, Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Four Rooms.
However, Roth’s only Oscar nomination was for Michael Caton-Jones’ Rob Roy.
The actor also showed himself well on TV: if you suddenly didn’t see the TV series “Lie to me”, then it’s very in vain. This is a kind of Dr. House, only without a drop of medicine, but with an equally interesting storyline.
1. Johnny Depp
Abstracting from the scandalous reputation and boring image of Jack Sparrow, that is, Captain Jack Sparrow, it can be unequivocally stated that Depp is very talented as an actor.
His track record has works worthy of a statuette, but he remained only a nominee three times for the films “Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street”, “Fairyland” and, oddly enough, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl “.
