Just some 10-15 years ago, most studios were reluctant to take on the adaptation of comics, since films about superheroes were niche and the mass audience “did not enter”, and it was not easy to lure a Hollywood star into such a project.
The boundaries were erased largely thanks to Christopher Nolan, who made an amazing Batman trilogy, showing everyone that movie comics can be serious in an adult way and collect a good box office.
After that, the dam was broken and film adaptations fell one after another, and two opposing sides appeared on the market – Marvel and DC.
It is now obvious that the first ones win this fight by a huge margin, so everyone wants to act with them, but some actors prefer not to choose a side at all and act both in one and in the other.
10 Ben Affleck
When DC decided to cast Ben Affleck as Batman, it caused a lot of discontent among fans.
Now that Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League have already been released, we can safely say that he did a good job with the role (which did not greatly save the quality of the films).
Against the backdrop of these holivars, many even forgot that Affleck was not the first to play superheroes: in 2003, he tried on the image of Daredevil from Marvel comics, which he later repeatedly regretted, receiving the Golden Raspberry.
9. Halle Berry
For the first time, the actress wore a superhero costume in 2000, starring as Storm in the first part of “X-Men”. The film turned out to be a breakthrough for its time, so sequels immediately followed, in between which she was offered to work for competitors from DC.
The role of Catwoman suited her in all respects and she played well, but the film itself was received terribly by the audience.
Hallie also won the Golden Raspberry for Worst Actress, and unlike most of her colleagues, she was not shy and personally came to the award ceremony, went up on stage and received an anti-award.
8. James Marsden
The actor got into superheroism along with Halle Berry, getting the role of the mutant Cyclops, who is in love with Jean Grey. His character, although not a key one, was still remembered by the audience, so the DC bosses decided to use his popularity for their 2006 film Superman Returns. Here he appeared in the form of an ordinary person without superpowers, who, during the absence of Clark Kent, began a relationship with Lois Lane.
7. Natalie Portman
Portman’s first appearance in film comics happened in 2005, when V for Vendetta was released, where the actress got the role of the protégé of the protagonist.
At that time, she was already a star of the first magnitude, because behind her shoulders were shooting in “Leon” by Luc Besson, as well as in “Star Wars”.
6 years later, after she received an Oscar for Black Swan, she was again called to a comic book film, but this time from Marvel. It’s hard to say what interested her in shooting in Thor, but the girlfriend of the Asgardian god in the end turned out to be worthy of her. It’s even a pity that she refused to act in a triquel.
6. Ryan Reynolds
Here’s who can be called the real defector, so it’s Ryan Reynolds. It all started with his appearance in Blade: Trinity (Marvel), after which he first became Deadpool in X-Men, and then signed a contract with DC for the role of Green Lantern.
Considering how resounding the failure of this film was, it is not surprising that Reynolds soon returned to Marvel and finally embodied the canon image of the chatty mercenary in red tights, which he had dreamed of for many years.
5. Hugo Weaving
The actor, who became famous for the role of Mr. Smith in the cult “Matrix”, in 2005 starred in another popular film – “V for Vendetta”, where his partner on the set was the already mentioned Natalie Portman. Despite the success of the picture itself, Weaving’s work went unnoticed, since his hero wears a mask all the time and it is impossible to recognize the actor.
After 6 years, he looked at the filming of the opposing Marvel camp, playing the main villain in the first Captain America solo movie – the Red Skull. Here, his character is also unrecognizable most of the time due to makeup, but at least in the beginning he walks around with his own face.
4. Djimon Hounsou
This not the most famous actor most often gets minor roles, which, thanks to his charisma and appearance, are perfectly remembered.
In DC, he starred in Constantine: The Lord of Darkness (Vertigo’s comic belongs to DC) along with Keanu Reeves, and he got to Marvel much later, becoming an opponent of Star-Lord in the first part of Guardians of the Galaxy.
The role of Korat the Pursuer was a success for the actor: a laconic, harsh and attractive character in his own way, attracting attention in every scene.
3. Michael Clarke Duncan
A big guy with very kind eyes, with which he conquered everyone in The Green Mile, he played the villain in Marvel’s Daredevil. It was his character Kingpin who was the main opponent of Murdoch, who was played, as you remember, by Ben Affleck.
At DC, he worked on the Green Lantern, and it’s not so easy to recognize him: Kilowog’s facial expressions and movements belong to Michael, given the level of graphics, it’s hard to guess.
2. Tommy Lee Jones
Directed by Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever, it was a highly controversial film, grossing three times its budget and receiving mixed reviews, with most of the complaints regarding Val Kilmer’s writing and acting.
The work of Tommy Lee Jones, who embodied the image of Harvey Dent (Two-Face), is the only thing that everyone indisputably recognized as successful. In The First Avenger, his character is not so cool, but still, Colonel Chester Phillips also fell in love with everyone.
1. Josh Brolin
Thanos, played by Brolin in The Avengers, is the most elaborate villain in the history of superhero films. This is also the merit of the actor, who was able to humanize the computer model with his voice, facial expressions and gestures. The same can be said for Cable from Deadpool XNUMX, with the only difference being that the villain turns out to be a hero at the end.
The work of Josh Brolin in DC turned out to be not so noticeable – the film “Jonah Hex” did not gain such popularity, but in general it turned out to be quite good. Here, by the way, Michael Fassbender starred, who later appeared in the image of a young Magneto from the X-Men universe.
