Unbelievable, but it is a fact! How men’s teeth differ from women’s

The gender of a person can be determined by his smile.

Every person’s smile is unique, and these are not empty words. But it is possible to find similarities, especially among members of the same sex. Important anthropometric indicators that distinguish the smile of men and women are:

  • the form;

  • Colour;

  • position of the teeth;

  • the lips of women are often located closer to the nose, therefore, when smiling, more teeth are opened;

  • the jaw, for example, in men, is usually wider, and the bone tissue is more massive and dense.

A good dentist understands who his patient is from one impression and the appearance of the jaw. And ordinary people can distinguish a man and a woman by a smile on four points (if suddenly needed).

How else are men’s teeth different from women’s?

Size

As a rule, women’s teeth are slightly narrower and shorter than those of men. Guys have larger incisors and canines, both in width and depth. In general, this difference leads to the fact that men’s teeth tend to be larger and more square, while women’s teeth are longer and thinner.

Fangs

Long and sharp fangs in prehistoric times were in aggressive and courageous predators. Therefore, the owner of such teeth is more likely to be a man, and not a woman, who is characterized by smooth and rounded edges of the teeth.

An interesting fact about canines: the distance between them is equal to the width of the nose: in women – during a smile, and in men in a calm state.

Interincisal angles

These are the spaces between the cutting edges of the anterior group of teeth. For “female” teeth, rounded corners of the incisors are characteristic, and for “male” teeth, they are more straight.

The second incisor of the upper jaw

In men, it usually resembles an even square in shape, almost the size of the central incisor, and the width of the tooth at the gums is visually indistinguishable from the width at the incisal edge. In this case, the edge of the tooth is flat. In women, such a tooth is usually much narrower than the central one, it often has an uneven edge and narrows noticeably towards the gum.

However, it is important to consider that gender is not the only factor that can affect the appearance of teeth. Genetics, nationality and various individual characteristics of the organism also play an important role. Only taking into account all these points, a good dentist will find a special approach to each patient and will be able to make a perfect smile.

What if the teeth “don’t fit”?

Sometimes people notice that their teeth are too small or “feminine” for the face, and sometimes, on the contrary, they worry about too wide, “masculine” smile. But today such problems are solved quickly. There are many methods that can be used to change the contour of the teeth: some make them slightly wider and shorter, others narrower and longer.

Good orthodontists strive to maintain the shape of healthy teeth as much as possible (regardless of femininity or masculinity) and recommend correcting a disproportionate smile. After all, if, for example, the teeth are too large for the jaw, they can begin to curl and go beyond the required limits, and this will entail the formation of an incorrect bite and even problems with digestion.

There are two main ways to correct a smile.

  • Direct restoration. It is carried out using composite materials. This option is suitable for the elimination of small defects in the front teeth, it also helps to restore the color and shape, to level the surface of the teeth in one visit.

  • Indirect restoration. A method of restoration of teeth, in which prosthetics is used (installation of veneers, aligners, crowns, implants, dental inlays).
