The sight of children threatened by screens

January 1, 2019.

A recent study points to the decline in children’s eyesight, especially due to exposure to screens.

Children’s sight is reduced because of the screens

Are your little ones going from television to tablet, or from game console to smartphone? Attention, screens represent a real threat to the eyes of our children and this, in a manner proportional to the exposure time. For all types of screens, close-up vision and blue light are accused of straining the eyes.

A recent study has just shed light on these predictable observations: the sight problems of children aged 4 to 10 years increased by two points in the last two years and by five points in two years. In all, 34% of them suffer from reduced vision.

An increase linked to the change in lifestyle

« This continuous increase is explained in particular by the evolution of our lifestyles and by the increasing use of screens. » explains the Observatory for Sight, which commissioned this study from the Ispos Institute. The exposure time of children is longer and longer, the supports more and more numerous.

According to the same study: 3 to 10 of children under 10 (63%) spend between one and two hours a day in front of a screen. A third (23%) spend between three and four hours on it, while 8% of them spend five hours or more. Only 6% spend less than an hour there. To protect the eyesight of your little ones, keep them away from screens or reduce exposure time as much as possible. What if we started by taking the smartphone out of the bedroom or turning off the television at least two hours before bedtime?
