Strabismus

General description of the disease

Strabismus is a disease belonging to the ophthalmic group, in which one of the eyes or both in turn deviate (sometimes roll) from the central axis, that is, they look in different directions. Because of this, a person’s gaze cannot normally focus on the thing, the subject that is being considered. To avoid double image, the brain blocks the image of the squinting eye. If the affected eye is left untreated, amblyopia can develop.

Causes of strabismus:

  1. 1 eye diseases, especially astigmatism, myopia;
  2. 2 a sharp decrease in vision in one eye;
  3. 3 various eye injuries;
  4. 4 stressful and stressful situations;
  5. 5 diseases of the central nervous system;
  6. 6 fright or other mental trauma;
  7. 7 abnormalities of the muscles of the eye;
  8. 8 birth trauma;
  9. 9 past illnesses such as meningitis, measles and flu;
  10. 10 inflammatory, tumor processes in the motor muscles of the eye.

Symptoms of strabismus

Often, squint can be seen by a person with the naked eye. In the patient, both eyes or one deviate to the side, as if floating and rolling.

Young children may have false squint. Parents of infants who have a wide bridge of the nose or a peculiar shape of the eyes and location often confuse the features of their child’s appearance with strabismus. But after the shape of the nose changes, the signs of strabismus disappear. Basically, children’s imaginary strabismus lasts up to half a year of life.

A patient with strabismus may also complain of severe and frequent pain, decreased vision, blurred images of objects, from visible symptoms – squinting, tilting the head in different directions (thus a person is trying to get rid of double vision).

Types of strabismus

Strabismus can be congenital or acquired.

Depending on where the axis of the eye is deviated, strabismus is:

  • converging – the squinting eye rolls to the bridge of the nose, is detected in very young children or can develop on the basis of high (sometimes even moderate) hyperopia;
  • diverging – the eye floats to the side of the temple, the main cause of its occurrence is myopia, but injuries, fear, past infectious diseases can also serve as causes;
  • vertical – the sore eye deviates up or down;
  • atypical – a rare form of strabismus, which is caused by disorders in genetics, for example, Down, Cruson, Moebius syndromes.

Depending on how many eyes are involved, strabismus can be:

  • monolateral – only one eye deviates from the central axis;
  • alternating – both eyes float away from the normal position, but in turn.

Strabismus can be permanent or temporary (signs of strabismus may disappear from time to time).

Depending on the origin, medical professionals distinguish strabismus:

  • friendly – begins in people with farsightedness or myopia, with this form, the mobility of the eye muscles is not impaired;
  • paralytic – occurs due to toxic poisoning, diseases of an infectious nature, tumor processes or vascular diseases, in which the movement of the muscles of the eye is disturbed (because of this, the patient may have double vision, may be dizzy and take an unnatural position to eliminate this split image) …

Useful foods for strabismus

To help the body get rid of the disease, you need proper nutrition, which will help strengthen the oculomotor muscles and improve visual acuity. To get this effect, you should eat:

  • protein products – lean meat and fish, seafood, chicken eggs, fermented milk and dairy products;
  • vegetables – carrots, pumpkins, bell peppers, legumes, eggplants, potatoes, tomatoes, cabbage of any kind;
  • fruits and berries – apricots, persimmons, grapes, kiwi, strawberries, citrus fruits, mangoes, melons, watermelons, raspberries, strawberries, blueberries, sea buckthorn);
  • whole grain cereals and cereals;
  • spinach, ginger and celery root, dill, lettuce, parsley, sorrel;
  • seeds, nuts;
  • vegetable oils;
  • you need to drink freshly squeezed juices, decoctions with rose hips, green tea;
  • bitter chocolate with a cocoa content of 60% and sugar should be no more than 40%.

These products contain vitamins of groups A, B, C and many microelements. They will help improve the condition of the visual organs, strengthen and tone the eye muscles that hold the eyeball.

Traditional medicine for strabismus

Traditional medicine provides a complex of gymnastic exercises for the eyes in combination with herbal medicine.

Exercises:

  1. 1 Stand so that the sun is shining in your back, close your good eye and cover it with your palm on top. The patient must remain open. Make turns towards the sun so that the sun’s rays fall into the eye, hold in this position for a few seconds. There should be at least 10 such repetitions at a time. Scientists have proven that ultraviolet rays have a beneficial effect on the eye muscles.
  2. 2 Tilt your head back and look at the tip of your nose until your eyes get tired. This exercise must be repeated at least 3 times. If a small child has to do it, then to lure him you can say so that he imagines a mosquito or a fly on the tip of his nose.
  3. 3 Exercise “button”. First, extend your arms straight forward, then alternately touch the tip of the nose with the tip of the index finger of each hand. In this case, you need to visually follow the movement of the finger.
  4. 4 Take a ruler in one hand, pull it out, then begin to twirl it in a chaotic manner. In this case, you need to follow the tip of the ruler. Then you need to repeat the same thing only with the other hand.
  5. 5 Close your eyes with your palms so that they are in complete darkness and no light comes through. In your thoughts, imagine an object, a fruit and describe its shape with eye movements. A square, a cross, a snake, a flower, an apple are best suited for presentation.

Phytotherapy includes treatment with herbal infusions and fees, eye drops and is an adjunct to therapeutic gymnastics:

  • It is necessary to drink a decoction from the roots of calamus, cabbage leaves (and you need to eat boiled leaves), rose hips, pine needles, clover, black currant, Chinese magnolia vine.
  • Dill powder eye drops; fresh honey, apple and onion juice in a ratio of 3: 3: 1 (you can also dilute honey with warm filtered water).

To prevent the child from developing squint:

  1. 1 toys (especially colorful ones) should not be hung over the bed very close to the eyes;
  2. 2 do not put the bed next to a mirror or other interesting and shiny objects for the baby (so that the child does not focus on this object, especially if it is on the side of it);
  3. 3 do not immediately surround the child with the attention of many relatives (otherwise the child will quickly change his gaze and rush, and this is bad for not strong eye muscles, which can stretch because of which the eyeball will not hold well and the eye will begin to float away);
  4. 4 do not include bright light directly in the eyes.

These simple guidelines will help you minimize eye strain.

Dangerous and harmful foods for strabismus

  • alcoholic and carbonated drinks;
  • store canned food, smoked meats, sauces, marinades;
  • high consumption of white refined sugar, coffee and tea;
  • semi-finished products and fast food;
  • products with the “E” code, dyes, fillers.

These products have a bad effect on the tone and condition of the oculomotor muscles, develop vascular diseases of the eyes, slag the body, due to which its protective functions fall and the likelihood of contracting infectious diseases increases.
