The causes of scoliosis

At the moment, the causes of scoliosis are being studied, however, the main ones are highlighted, which experts call acquired:

  • Spine injury;
  • Shifts of the cervical vertebrae during labor;
  • Improper sitting position;
  • Variety of muscle development as a result of rheumatism, unilateral paralysis;
  • Sedentary lifestyle, poor physical development or malnutrition and metabolic disorders;
  • Such diseases as rickets, poliomyelitis, pleurisy, tuberculosis can also provoke the appearance of scoliosis.

In addition, congenital causes can be distinguished – intrauterine disorders of the development of the vertebrae as a result of malnutrition or bad habits of the mother, as well as as a consequence of the irregular shape of the mother’s pelvis. There are also people with a hereditary predisposition to scoliosis, for example, torticollis or those who suffer from leg length asymmetry.

Scoliosis symptoms

It is very important to recognize scoliosis in the early stages, although this is not easy, since the person does not feel any pain. However, subsequently, the disease will lead to malaise and cosmetic defects in the body, which will be extremely difficult to correct.

The main manifestations of scoliosis:

  1. 1 One shoulder becomes slightly higher than the other, especially when standing;
  2. 2 The angle of one scapula bulges strongly;
  3. 3 One scapula becomes taller than the other;
  4. 4 When leaning forward, you can see the curvature of the spinal column;
  5. 5 The pelvis becomes sloping and the waist becomes uneven;
  6. 6 The gait is disturbed, while one leg seems shorter than the other;
  7. 7 Painful sensations appear in the lower back, shoulder blades, chest;

Types of scoliosis:

  • Thoracic – the thoracic spine is curved;
  • Lumbar – only the lumbar spine is curved;
  • Thoracolumbar – the zone of the thoracolumbar junction is curved;
  • Combined – an S-shaped curvature was revealed.

Useful foods for scoliosis

When scoliosis is detected, doctors use a whole range of methods, including manual therapy, massage, physiotherapy and physical therapy, aimed at the patient’s recovery. They also pay special attention to changing his diet for more effective treatment.

  • It is very important to eat enough protein-rich foods, especially if a schoolchild is suffering from scoliosis. It is these substances, decomposing into amino acids in the body, affect its development and growth, and also enrich it with energy. Sources of protein are peanuts, beans, peas, sturgeon caviar, cottage cheese, tuna, pink salmon, halibut, as well as chicken, rabbit, beef, turkey, and lean lamb.
  • Be sure to consume a sufficient amount of fruits and vegetables, as they contain a maximum of vitamins and minerals.
  • It is useful to diversify your diet with cereals (rice, buckwheat, oatmeal, barley, semolina, millet), as well as pasta, since they are not only carbohydrates and saturate the body with energy, but also contain useful substances such as copper (in pasta), boron, iron, magnesium, etc. (in cereals).
  • Doctors recommend increasing the intake of foods with vitamin E during this period, since it is not only an antioxidant, but also takes part in the formation of bone tissue. It is found in fish, nuts, dried fruits (dried apricots and prunes), spinach, sea buckthorn, sorrel, oatmeal and barley. Recently, however, scientists have started talking about the fact that excessive intake of this vitamin in the body negatively affects bone tissue. The information is quite contradictory and at the moment it is being carefully studied, experiments are being carried out, but it is up to you to use or not use these products.
  • With scoliosis, it is very important to add vitamin C foods to your diet, such as black currants, rose hips, bell peppers, citrus fruits, kiwi, sea buckthorn, honeysuckle, various types of cabbage and strawberries. The benefits of this vitamin in its important role in the formation of bone tissue.
  • The use of vitamin D in the treatment of scoliosis is also necessary, since it is responsible for the regulation of calcium and phosphorus metabolism in the body and has a positive effect on the growth of bone tissue. It is found in some types of fish (mackerel, salmon), chicken eggs, sour cream and butter.
  • It is useful to add seafood and seaweed to your diet, as they contain phosphorus and polyunsaturated fatty acids, which strengthen the vertebrae and improve the functioning of the intervertebral discs.
  • It is very important to eat as much dairy products, cottage cheese, cheese, different types of nuts, legumes, oatmeal and barley as possible, as they enrich the body with calcium, which plays an important role in the formation of bones.
  • Eating foods with vitamin A helps the body absorb calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for building and strengthening bones. Sources of this vitamin are carrots, melon, sea buckthorn, apricots, yellow pumpkin, eggs, fish and animal liver.
  • Also, during this period, the body needs vitamins of group B, while vitamins B1, B2, B6 and B12 are especially useful, which not only participate in metabolic processes in the body, but also strengthen the collagen skeleton of bones. Their sources are legumes, spinach, wheat bread, buckwheat, animal liver, beef, lean pork, walnuts, potatoes, vegetable oil.

Folk remedies for the treatment of scoliosis

When treating scoliosis, traditional medicine advises sleeping on a hard bed, equipping the workplace with furniture suitable for growth, swimming, dousing with cold water, and also performing a set of simple exercises aimed at strengthening the back muscles.

  1. 1 You need to take a gymnastic stick and put it on your shoulders behind your head, while clasping your hands. It is necessary to sit in this position for a while. It is very important that the back and neck are always straight. This exercise is recommended twice a day for 15 minutes.
  2. 2 You need to stand straight against the wall, not leaning against it. However, the heels, back and head must be in contact with the wall. In this position, you need to stand 1 time a day for 10-15 minutes.
  3. 3 It is necessary to lie on a 2-sleeping, flat bed (it is better if it is hard enough), placing a roller of a 100×4 cm sheet parallel to the spine under the back.In this position, relaxed as much as possible, you need to lie twice a day for 10 minutes.
  4. 4 To perform the next exercise, you will need an ordinary horizontal bar. It is necessary to hang on it on outstretched arms, relaxing your back and rhythmically turning the body to the right and then to the left by 60 degrees. The longer you can do this exercise, the better.

    You cannot jump off the horizontal bar so as not to cause pain in the back. First, you need to strain your back and, hanging for a couple of seconds, jump off.

    These exercises work well in the early stages of the disease. There are other complexes, however, before you start training, it is better to consult with your doctor to determine which one will help you!

    If scoliosis is causing back pain, it can be relieved with compresses or herbal baths.

  5. 5 It is necessary to apply rolled rye flour dough, pre-mixed with turpentine, to the sore spot.
  6. 6 You can also mince raw potatoes and horseradish root, mix them and, covering the sore spot with a bandage, spread the resulting mixture on it. Tie a warm scarf or downy shawl on top. Remove when the skin begins to burn strongly.
  7. 7 You can also make a tincture of crushed aloe leaves, 100 g of honey and 0.5 tbsp. vodka. Cotton cloth is impregnated with it, which is then applied in the form of a compress to a sore spot at night.
  8. 8 In addition, pine baths help get rid of pain. To do this, chopped coniferous branches are placed in a 10-liter container with water and, putting it on the fire, boil it for 10 minutes. The resulting broth is infused for 4 hours and filtered, and then poured into a bath. It is necessary to sit in such a bath for no more than 30 minutes.

Dangerous and harmful foods for scoliosis

  • You can not eat a lot of fatty, smoked, sweet and starchy foods, as these products lead to the development of obesity and, as a result, to additional stress on the spine.
  • Excessive consumption of salt and animal fats negatively affects joints and bones.
  • It is recommended to limit the consumption of coffee and strong black tea, as the caffeine they contain flushes calcium out of the bones.
  • Alcohol and smoking are contraindicated, as they poison the body with toxins.
