Products banned at the time of the Dormition fast
 

The Dormition fast is one of four multi-day fasts of the Church calendar, are advised to abide by all the Orthodox. It was installed in honor of the feast of the assumption of the blessed virgin. Therefore, in Orthodox countries it is still just called spasivka, Spas, Gospodjinci, Vesperini, Spoink.

Holidays take place always at the same time – August 14. And ends on the eve of the feast of the assumption of the blessed virgin Mary – August 27.

Traditionally within two weeks of the fast people must adhere to certain food rules. The menu is the same strict as in lent before Easter. Fast food and beverages drink in moderation.

Forbidden food during the Dormition fast

Two weeks should be excluded from the diet:

  • meat and all meat products;
  • milk and all dairy products;
  • eggs;
  • butter;
  • the fish (only on the feast of the Transfiguration – August 19);
  • not a fast pastries and sweets;
  • fast food;
  • alcohol.

We also advise you not to abuse the spices, salt, sugar.

What exactly you can eat in the Dormition fast

According to monastic regulations, the kind of food depends on the day of the week. Simple and varied food in the Dormition fast for days looks like this:

  • In the Monday, Wednesday and Friday — xerophagy (the food can be consumed not processed thermally and with no oil and sweet: bread, water, salt, raw vegetables and pickled fruits, dried fruits, sprouted grains, nuts, honey, herbs). Drink: water, juice.
  • On Tuesdays and Thursdays — food of plant origin, made without oil, the products can be cooked (vegetable soups, porridge, boiled and baked new potatoes, steamed and baked vegetables, mushrooms, etc.). From drinks: tea, coffee, fruit drinks, jelly, herbal tea with honey.
  • On Saturdays and Sundays you can eat foods of plant origin, prepared with vegetable oil, and drink wine. Vegetable soups, porridge, potatoes (fried, boiled, baked), steamed and baked vegetables, mushrooms, bread. Allowed beverages: tea, coffee, fruit drinks, jelly, broth.

Only on August 19, you can add in the menu the fish, and already on August 28 at the end of lent, you can eat everything.

By the way, in the post you can not just boil food. Cook your food on a steam bath, bake, but don’t get carried away with fried foods.

The basis of nutrition in this period should be boiled, steamed, baked vegetables and fruits. Eat fresh tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, zucchini, beets, carrots. For dessert perfect fruit will be: apples, apricots, peaches, blueberries, blackberries, watermelons, melons and others.

An important component of the diet in post is cereal. Cook it in water and preferably without oil.

But to replace meat, milk and eggs will help vegetable protein, which is peanuts, lentils, soy and other legumes, and it is present in the eggplant.
