Opisthorchiasis

General description of the disease

Opisthorchiasis is a parasitic disease that belongs to the group of trematodes and is caused by flat worms.

Path of infection with opisthorchiasis

The parasite enters the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas when eating fish of the carp family (bream, roach, crucian carp, ide, carp, tench).

Forms and symptoms of opisthorchiasis

Opisthorchiasis can be acute and chronic. The acute course of the disease lasts from a month to two. Chronic opisthorchiasis is considered, which lasts from 15 to 25 years and even throughout life.

Acute form opisthorchiasis manifests itself in the form of urticaria, fever, pain in joints and muscles, colic under the spoon and under the rib on the right side, enlarged liver and gallbladder, nausea and vomiting reflexes, heartburn, flatulence, bloating, decreased appetite can be felt. During examinations, doctors discover stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, or erosive gastroudenitis. Cases of lung damage and allergic reactions have been recorded, which are symptoms of asmoid bronchitis.

Chronic opisthorchiasis manifests itself in the form of pancreatitis, cholecystitis, hepatitis or gastroduodenitis. This is due to an imbalance in the human immune system and the onset of irreversible processes that cannot be stopped even after the successful removal of the parasite. Also, severe allergic reactions in the form of urticaria, arthralgia, Quincke’s edema and in the form of a simple food allergy can speak of chronic opisthorchiasis.

In addition to affecting the functioning of the gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary system, opisthorchiasis negatively affects the nervous system. Patients complain of increased irritability, constant fatigue and lethargy, frequent headaches and dizziness. With a complex course of the disease, excessive sweating, trembling of the fingers of the upper extremities, eyelids and tongue are observed. Sometimes, due to clearly identified neurogenic disorders, patients are misdiagnosed. Doctors can deliver neurosis or dystonia.

Complications of opisthorchiasis:

  • bilious peritonitis;
  • cirrhosis, liver abscess;
  • pancreatitis of a destructive acute nature;
  • pancreatic cancer, liver.

Treatment of opisthorchiasis is carried out in 3 stages:

  1. 1 at the first stage, the removal of an allergic reaction, inflammatory processes in the gastrointestinal tract and bile-excreting pathways is carried out, the intestines are cleansed, detoxification therapy is carried out;
  2. 2 the second stage involves the elimination of flatworms from the body;
  3. 3 at the third stage, the patient undergoes a rehabilitation course, during which all secretory and motor disorders must be restored.
