Nutrition for sinusitis

General description of the disease

Sinusitis is a type of sinusitis, which is characterized by inflammatory processes in the mucous membranes of the maxillary sinuses. This disease is the result of complications after previous illnesses: acute respiratory infections, influenza, acute rhinitis, scarlet fever, measles and other infectious diseases. Also, attacks of seasonal allergies, bacteria and fungi can provoke sinusitis. The development of the disease begins when the outflow of mucus from the sinuses is blocked, as a result, a favorable environment is formed for the reproduction of harmful microorganisms and the onset of inflammation.

Sinusitis is considered the most common type of sinusitis, which affects almost all age groups of people. Only an ENT doctor can diagnose the disease based on the results of rhinoscopy, X-ray and examination of nasal mucus swabs. Sinusitis treatment is carried out by piercing, laser therapy, vacuum catheterization, anti-inflammatory and antiviral drugs. Refusal of treatment can cause serious complications (meningitis, an infection of the cranial cavities, brain abscess, encephalitis, otitis media, bronchitis, pneumonia, ophthalmitis), which can lead to partial or complete loss of vision and hearing, paralysis and even death.

Varieties of sinusitis:

  • Acute sinusitis… Its development occurs against the background of acute rhinitis and infectious diseases of the respiratory system, gums, and teeth transferred the day before. Also, severe hypothermia with reduced immunity can provoke the disease.
  • Chronic sinusitis is a consequence of prolonged treatment or untreated acute sinusitis. In this case, there is a thickening of the walls of the sinuses, their hypertrophy, a change in the cartilaginous tissue of the nasal septum.

Causes:

  • Harmful microorganisms;
  • Seasonal allergies;
  • Polyps;
  • Congenital structural features of the nasopharynx;

Dangerous and harmful products for sinusitis

There are some types of foods that can negatively affect the flow of mucus from the maxillary sinuses and make it thicker. These products include:

  • Dairy products – May provoke additional mucus production. If people have congenital lactose intolerance, then this can also cause the development of chronic sinusitis.
  • Overeating or a heavy dinner at night can lead to the ingestion of gastric juice into the esophagus, and from there into the respiratory tract. As a result, constant irritation of the mucous membrane can cause sinusitis.
  • Alcohol and caffeine. All drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine dry out the mucous membrane and as a result, the mucus outflow channels are blocked. It stagnates and the patient’s condition worsens.
  • Products and drugs that can cause individual intolerance and allergic reactions – this can lead to swelling of the nasopharynx.
