In all the rest, periodic numbness of the hands signals a malfunction in the body – this may be a consequence of diabetes mellitus, migraine, stroke, atherosclerosis. But if there are no serious diseases, but there is a problem, the cause should be sought in the head and neck area.

Due to the displacement of the vertebrae and overstrain of the muscles, the nerve trunks that go to the side of the hands from the cervical spinal nerves are compressed. Depending on which nerve was pinched, the entire arm, hands, or fingers become numb. Overstrain, dislocation or stretching of the wrist, elbow, shoulder joint are aggravating factors.

Today, everyone faces overstrain: we type on the computer, type texts on the phone, because of this, the muscles of the arms are constantly very tense. Prolonged disturbance of nervous nutrition can cause muscle atrophy, so it is necessary to consult a specialist as soon as possible. And at this time, you can relieve your well-being at home.

Therapeutic exercise

Exercise should be done regularly and even if numbness is not a problem for you. By warming up and stretching your neck muscles, you are preventing disease.

“Crane neck”

  • Starting position: standing, feet shoulder-width apart and slightly bent. The pelvis is slightly turned forward, the back is straight. The arms hang freely along the body. 

  • Slowly perform a circular motion with your head like a whip: the head moves forward, while the face does not need to be lowered.

  • Having reached the extreme front point, bend your neck, tilting your head forward. Without changing position, move your head towards the body.

  • Then straighten your neck, vertebra by vertebra. The head returns to its original vertical position. Such a movement is made by the crane when it drinks water.

  • During the exercise, the body is as relaxed as possible.

Crick

  • Starting position: standing. The arms are lowered along the body.

  • Pull your right hand down and your head up.

  • Turn your head slightly to the sides to engage as many muscles as possible.

  • Repeat the exercise with the other hand.

  • Finally, pull both hands down and your chin up.

Self massage

  • To relax the muscles in your neck, grasp the opposite shoulder with the palm of one hand and pinch it firmly.

  • Then with the other hand – the other shoulder and the very neck. The pinches should be strong enough, tangible.

  • Such a study of the shoulder girdle will relieve tension, make the muscles more elastic and free up the passage of blood vessels.

Warming up

  • Bath or sauna give the best effect. In this case, it is necessary to exclude dousing with ice water and rubbing with snow. A sudden change in temperature will cause muscle spasm. An obligatory part of the procedure is an abundant hot drink.

  • Hot bath. The water should not be scalding, but perceptibly hot. Then continue to warm yourself under the covers. Drink hot tea, wear warm socks, a woolen belt. Avoid hypothermia, drafts, and be sure to repeat the procedure several times within 1-2 weeks.

After working at the computer for a long time it is necessary to relieve tension from the hands. To do this, perform the movements synchronously, as if you were drawing the number eight in the air. Movements should be smooth, keep your fingers together.
