«Monday Syndrome»: how to prepare for the start of the working week

If the phrase “Monday is a hard day” ceases to be just the name of your favorite movie, and we spend Sunday in anxiety and excitement because of the upcoming week, then we are talking about the so-called “Monday syndrome”. We share 9 ways to get rid of it.

1. Forget mail for the weekend.

To really relax, you need to forget about work for the weekend. But this is not so easy to do if notifications of new letters are constantly displayed on the phone screen. Even 5 minutes that you spend on Saturday or Sunday, reading the text of a client or boss, can negate the atmosphere of relaxation.

The easiest way out is to temporarily remove the mail application from your phone. For example, on Friday at 6-7 pm. This will become a kind of ritual and a signal for your body that you can exhale and relax.

2. Work on Sunday

“What, we just decided to forget about work?” That’s right, it’s just that the work is different. Sometimes, in order to avoid worrying about how the next week will go, it is worth devoting 1 hour to planning. By thinking ahead about what you need to do, you will gain a sense of calm and control.

3. Add a «For the Soul» Activity to Your Weekly Plan

Work is work, but there are other things to do. Try to make a list of things that make you happy. It can be anything: for example, reading a book that has long been waiting in the wings, or going to a coffee shop near the house. Or maybe a simple bubble bath. Schedule time for them and remember that these activities are just as important as work.

4. Try to avoid alcohol parties

We spent five days waiting for the weekend to break away — go to a bar or drop in at a party with friends. On the one hand, it helps to be distracted and get more positive emotions.

On the other hand, alcohol will only increase your anxiety — not in the moment, but the next morning. So, on Sunday, the fear of approaching the working week will be exacerbated by fatigue, dehydration and a hangover.

5. Define the highest goal of the work

Think why are you working? Of course, to have something to pay for food and clothes. But there must be something more significant. Maybe thanks to the work you will save up money for the trip of your dreams? Or does what you do benefit other people?

If you understand that your work is not about providing yourself with basic necessities, but has some value, you will become less worried about it.

6. Focus on the positives of the job

If the work may not have a higher goal, then there will certainly be some advantages. For example, good colleagues, communication with which broadens one’s horizons and simply brings pleasure. Or the acquisition of valuable experience that will later be useful.

You need to understand that we are not talking about a toxic positive here — these pluses will not block the minuses, they will not forbid you to experience negative emotions. But you will understand that you are not in the darkness, and this may make you feel better.

7. Talk to colleagues

Chances are good that you are not alone in your experiences. Think about which of your colleagues you could discuss the topic of stress with? Who do you trust enough to share your feelings and thoughts?

If more than two people have encountered this problem, then it can be brought up for discussion with the boss — what if this conversation becomes a starting point for changes in your department?

8. Check your mental health

Anxiety, apathy, fear… All of these can be the result of mental health problems, even if you enjoy your job. And even more so if not. Of course, checking with a specialist will never be superfluous, but especially alarming bells are abdominal pain, trembling and shortness of breath during the working day.

9. Start looking for a new job

And you looked for pluses, and arranged a weekend for yourself, and turned to a specialist, but you still don’t want to go to work? You should probably consider looking for a new location after all.

On the one hand, it is important for you — for your health, for the future. And on the other hand, for your environment, since a difficult relationship with work affects all areas of life.
