The history of the Mojito cocktail

Mojito (Mojito) – one of the most popular cocktails in all of human history.

Like many rum-based drinks, it was first prepared in the capital of Cuba, Havana, in a small restaurant, Bodeguita del Medio, which is located near the famous place of pilgrimage for tourists – the cathedral on Emperado Street.

The restaurant was founded by the Martinez family in 1942, and it is still operating today, it has been visited by many famous people of different years, many of them precisely because of the Mojito cocktail.

At the beginning of its existence, the cocktail included a few drops of angostura, but after the distribution of Mojito around the world, this ingredient was no longer added due to its rarity and high cost.

The prototype of the modern Mojito drink is the Drak drink, which was consumed by pirates on ships. In order not to drink naked, very strong rum, mint and lemon were added to it. In addition, such a drink was the prevention of colds and scurvy – the main pirate diseases.

Such a combination, quite unusual for cocktails, may have been added to rum in order to hide the very high strength of this drink.

The origin of the name is explained in two ways.

On the one hand, Mojo (mojo) in Spanish means a sauce that includes garlic, pepper, lemon juice, vegetable oil and herbs.

According to another version, mojito is a modified word “mojadito”, which means “slightly wet” in Spanish.
