Insomnia – Our doctor’s opinion

As part of its quality approach, Passeportsanté.net invites you to discover the opinion of a health professional. Dr Jacques Allard, general practitioner, gives you his opinion on theinsomnia :

Insomnia is a very common problem. If you suffer from transient insomnia, you probably know the cause. If this insomnia is difficult to bear, sleeping pills may be helpful, for a short period of 2 or 3 weeks, no more.

If you have chronic insomnia the problem is completely different and I do not encourage hypnotics out of the box. These drugs taken over a long period (as little as 4 to 6 weeks) are always psychological and often physical addiction; it is very difficult to get rid of it. Successful weaning requires a new routine before bed and the cognitive therapy that we have described. It is therefore much more advisable to put these rules into practice first and also to apply the advice offered in the Prevention section.

Also, if you think that a health problem is the cause of your insomnia (chronic pain, breathing difficulties, gastroesophageal reflux disease, depression, etc.), see your doctor. Your doctor may suggest treatment or readjust your medication.

Finally, if your insomnia persists because it is caused by a stress whose source is known (a problem at work or in your personal life, etc.), do not hesitate to consult a psychologist if necessary. You could get back to sleep!
