There are known options when this dish is prepared with the addition of prunes, cereals, bell peppers, sorrel, nettle and other unusual ingredients. In some regions, sweetish chestnuts are used instead of potatoes. Nothing terrible will happen if for some reason you forgot to put potatoes in the borscht – many cook it at all even without meat. For density, you can put a little beets and cabbage, diced or finely chopped. The taste will become more intense if you add a little boiled white or red large beans. You can buy it ready-made or boil it yourself in broth. But keep in mind that the legumes are cooked for at least an hour and a half with preliminary soaking overnight.
