Europe to move away from disposable plastic tableware from 2021

A law that bans the use of single-use plastic has been passed by the European Parliament. The overwhelming majority of MEPs voted for the introduction of a ban on plastic products in public catering: 560 people, 28 abstained from voting and 35 voted against.

According to the new law, by 2021 the EU will ban such plastic products: disposable cutlery (forks, knives, spoons and chopsticks),

  • disposable plastic plates,
  • plastic straws for drinks,
  • cotton buds,
  • Styrofoam food containers and cups.

MEPs are seriously concerned about how much plastic gets into the world’s oceans, settles in nature and what kind of threat it poses to wildlife.

Therefore, a course has been taken for maximum processing. So, by 2029, EU member states will be required to collect 90% of plastic bottles for recycling, and they will be made using 25% recycled materials in 2025 and 30% in 2030.

We will remind, earlier we talked about the fact that the Queen of Great Britain declared war on plastic dishes.
