The history of the Bloody Mary cocktail began in 1921 at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris. Once, a bartender named Ferdinand Petiot mixed vodka and tomato juice in a glass out of boredom. Later, spices were added to the mix, and it acquired a familiar taste. The bar’s regulars liked the impromptu performance. One of them even remembered a mutual friend of Mary’s from Chicago, a waitress at the Blood Bucket bar. Rumor has it that the cocktail was named after her. According to another version, he owes his name to the bloodthirsty English Queen Mary Tudor.

So, at the bottom of a tall glass, mix a pinch of salt and black pepper, 0.5 tsp Worcestershire sauce and 2-3 drops of tabasco sauce. Add a handful of crushed ice, 45 ml of vodka, 90 ml of tomato juice and 20 ml of lemon juice. Mix everything thoroughly, decorate with a sprig of celery and a slice of lemon. The irresistible “Bloody Mary” is ready to appear before the guests in all its glory.

Another popular mix with a “feminine beginning” is “Margarita”. The history of the origin of the cocktail is connected with a certain actress Marjorie King, who very conveniently looked into the Rancho La Gloria bar. The charmed bartender treated her to a cocktail of his own composition, mixing tequila with liqueur and orange juice. The actress was delighted, and the flattered bartender shifted her name to a sonorous way and called the creation “Margarita”. Another legend says that the cocktail was invented by socialite Margot Sames, and her visionary friend Tommy Hilton, the owner of the famous hotel chain, included the drink in the menu of hotel bars.

The edges of the glass for “Margarita” are moistened with water and dipped in fine salt. Combine 50 ml of silver tequila, 25 ml of orange liqueur and 10 ml of sugar syrup in a shaker. Pour out the ice cubes, shake vigorously and pour the cocktail into glasses. Decorate them with a slice of lime, and you can introduce guests to the “Margarita”.

Mojito is one of the most popular alcoholic cocktails with rum. And the number of stories of its origin is impressive. According to one of them, the drink was invented by the English navigator Francis Drake. Another version says that the refreshing mix was invented by African slaves to brighten up the painful stay on the plantations. A third source suggests that mojito revealed himself to the world in 1930 at the height of the “golden youth” party in Cuba: by that time, only rum, lime and mint remained at the bartender’s disposal. Mojito is strongly associated with sunny Cuba and the biggest admirer of the cocktail — Ernest Hemingway.

Put 20 mint leaves, 2-3 lime slices in a high glass, pour 20 ml of sugar syrup and carefully knead with a pestle. Now add a handful of crushed ice and 50 ml of light rum. It remains to top up a glass of soda to the brim and garnish with a circle of lime and mint.

A small paradise in the tropics

Recipes for delicious alcoholic cocktails will not do without “Pina colada”. The authorship here is also claimed by several people. One of them is the bartender Ramon Mingota, who accidentally created the coveted combination for a friend and owner of the Barracina bar. The successful experience was even immortalized by a commemorative plaque. The second candidate is the scientist Ramon Irizarry, who received a special order to create a drink from the authorities of Puerto Rico. Thanks to his success, he became rich, and science was finished. The oldest legend claims that the cocktail was first mixed in 1820 by the pirate Roberto Coffresi to cheer up the team.

Combine 60 ml of white rum, 70 ml of coconut cream and 100 g of pineapple in the bowl of a blender. Beat the ingredients at medium speed into a homogeneous mass. High glasses are half filled with ice, pour a cocktail and decorate with a slice of pineapple. This sweet tropical fantasy is the best remedy for February gloom.

Fashion for the cocktail “Cosmopolitan” broke out after the release of the TV series “Sex and the City”, although the history of the creation of the cocktail began in 1985 through the efforts of a female bartender Cheryl Cook. She noticed that customers most often order drinks in wide martini glasses because they like their stylish look. Especially for this form, she came up with the original content: a mixture of lemon and cranberry juice, citrus liqueur and vodka. Later, American bartender Dale Degroff replaced lemon juice with lime, and ordinary vodka with Citron vodka. It was rumored that this creation was inspired by the singer Madonna.

To prepare the mix, fill the shaker with crushed ice. Alternately pour into it 40 ml of lemon vodka, 15 ml of Cointreau liqueur and lime juice, 30 ml of cranberry juice. Shake the cocktail well, fill the martini glass and decorate with a slice of lime.

By the way, bartenders also have a professional holiday, and it is celebrated on February 6. If you miss the celebrations, this is a good occasion to gather your friends, treat them to hand-made mixes and entertain them with stories of great cocktails.
