Detox menu. Truth and fiction

В (Volume 28, Issue 6, pages 675–686, December 2015) scientists from the British Dietetic Association review research on commercial detox diets: flawed techniques, small samples prove nothing. From a physiological point of view, to neutralize poisons (including those that are formed during normal cellular reactions), we have a liver, and also kidneys, skin, lungs for their excretion. No juice from sprouts, no herbal tea will make the liver work better; in a healthy person, it does just fine.

We cannot, by an effort of will, increase the production of enzymes, influence the growth and differentiation of cells, we cannot even change the color of the eyes. The proposal to cleanse the liver or intestines of toxins sounds utter nonsense. If something is wrong with the liver or kidneys, the consequences will be much more serious than a bad complexion, dull hair and drowsiness.

“” Writes that the appeals of the scientific community to the manufacturers of detox products to explain the mechanism of their action, to name and present “toxins”, did not give any result.

Yes, some do feel more energized when they start a detox diet. And Gwyneth Paltrow recommends. Perhaps this is the effect of novelty, plus a more measured routine and more attention to food. Or maybe this is because the amount of food waste decreases. Well, all this can be done without detoxing – meaningless, expensive, harmful with prolonged use.

Elena Motova relies on principles дindicative medicine (). This is an approach in which the doctor makes decisions about diagnosis, prevention, treatment based on the available scientific evidence of their effectiveness and safety.

Each medicine, each diagnostic method, any intervention with a therapeutic or prophylactic purpose should be studied in order to understand whether they will have the necessary effect, whether they will have negative consequences, which methods will be the best when compared.

Based on clinical studies, the world medical community receives recommendations that a particular method of treatment or procedure is useful, effective, has advantages, and is indicated for use. Or useless, ineffective, sometimes harmful, and not recommended. Or the data are not so convincing, sometimes contradictory, can be applied in certain circumstances, more research is needed.
