Daniel Pennac, an incredibly popular children’s and adult writer in France, gave many years of his life to school — as a bad student and as a wonderful teacher (he taught literature in one of the schools in a residential area of Paris). From these years, on both sides of the teacher’s pulpit, his new book was born.
As if yesterday the suffering experienced by a loser who would very much like to study well, but he does not succeed; the observations of the wise teacher that this loser has become and who, by virtue of his own experience, sees much more behind the deliberately cheeky manners of teenagers from the suburbs than most teachers think it appropriate to see; reflections of a writer who is trying to understand the problems of today’s school — Pennak managed to fit all this into a book that reads in one breath, like a novel. In 2007, «School Suffering» was awarded the Renaudeau Prize — the second most important (after Goncourt) literary prize in France.
