Barley in the eye: how to treat

The most important thing is not to squeeze out the abscess (this will only aggravate the situation and in some cases will lead to the emergence of new “sores”). Be attentive to yourself and follow all the rules of personal hygiene: do not touch your face with dirty hands, do not use someone else’s towel and do not put makeup on your eyes.

At home, you can cauterize the abscess with iodine, alcohol or brilliant green. Do this gently with a cotton swab. Internal barley is also often cauterized, but in this case, damage to the mucous membrane of the eye can be caused.

An excellent folk remedy, which everyone has probably heard about, is to try to “draw out” the pus with a warm hard-boiled egg. However, experts are sure: any “warm” methods are effective only if the pus has not yet appeared – otherwise the process of suppuration will only intensify.

How else can you treat barley at home? Lotions from aloe juice, calendula tincture (do not forget to dilute them with plain water!), Herbal infusions (chamomile, bird cherry flowers, birch buds are perfect) will help. You can also rinse your eyes with black tea.

If you do not self-medicate, but still (which is very correct) consult an ophthalmologist, he will prescribe you special eye drops. In some cases, it is necessary to influence a high-frequency electromagnetic field – UHF therapy. At a high temperature, drugs are prescribed for oral administration. In rare cases (more often it concerns internal barley, which is much more difficult to treat external), surgical intervention is required.
